Amandla Stenberg slams Kylie Jenner over new cornrows
The Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg has taken aim at reality TV star Kylie Jenner and her new cornrow hairstyle, accusing her of appropriating "black culture".
Kim Kardashian's younger half-sister took to Instagram.com on Saturday (11Jul15) to post a photo of herself wearing a crop top, sweatpants, and freshly braided cornrows, adding the caption, "I woke up like disss (this)."
The photo has since garnered more than one million 'likes' and
111,000 comments, including one from 16-year-old Stenberg, who
played Rue in the first Hunger Games film.
She writes, "when u appropriate black features and culture but fail
to use ur (your) position of power to help black Americans by
directing attention towards ur (your) wigs instead of police
brutality or racism".
Jenner hit back at Stenberg, replying, "Mad if I don't. Mad if I
do... Go hang w Jaden or something," referring to her longtime
friend and rumoured ex-boyfriend Jaden Smith, who was Stenberg's
date to her high school prom earlier this year (15).
It isn't the first time Stenberg has spoken out about the issue of
cultural appropriation - in April (15), she made a video, titled
Don't Cash Crop My Cornrows, in which she accuses pop stars such as
Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, as well as Kim
Kardashian, of using black culture to gain popularity, as part of a
high school history project.
In the clip, she posed the question, "What would America be like if
we loved black people as much as we love black culture?"
