Anthony Mackie Unleashes The Falcon in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Have you used that line before the movie?

Every day.

So you were made for this part.

I don't know what it is. It it it really just came out in a unique way. I mean, it's it's a great opportunity. I was I've been a fan of the uh Marvel movies and the Marvel universe for a while. And then, um, it kind of just whoa, don't shake that thing at me. You saw that? Jeez. I think we're dating. And um, I got the call from Marvel about this movie about a year and a half ago. And, um, it kind of just came together. I mean, I've been friends with of Chris Evans for a while, and, uh, we this is our third movie together. So, it's kind of working out.

So, you get the call from Marvel?

Get the call from Marvel.

Do you feel a bit of pressure going into a movie like this?

Not at all, man. I told him I was like, look, I'm in it to win it. I mean, it's not often as an actor you go into a project knowing it's going to be a quality product. You know? But Marvel churns out quality movies and from single time. Right. So, when Marvel call you and tap you and put you in the game, you know you're winning the World Series.

You have to get in shape for the role, obviously.

Yeah, I worked out a lot. I I'm a very competitive person. So, I was talking to Chris and, uh, he was just telling me, oh man, I'm in such good shape, you know, I'm going to look great.

He always is. He always is. Always is.

So, I was like, you know what, I'm going to go in and I'm going to go hard. So, I changed my diet, was doing two a day. So, I showed up, but then I was like, yo, where's my spandex? Where's my tight clothes? And they gave Chris Evans all these tight shirts and they gave me sweat shirts. Right. So, every day I showed up to set in like a wife beater. Like, yo, when am I getting in? Baby oil, you know what I mean? Right. They just give me a sweatshirt.

Is there a scene in the movie that sticks out as being your favorite, your personal favorite?

Uh, my favorite scene is the first time I fly. I'm standing on a, um, helicraft carrier and there's a jet coming at me. This is the first day of shooting. It's my favorite scene because it was the most awkward moment of my acting career. I had to I was 75 ft in the air and there were cushions all over the ground. They wanted me to jump off the platform, turn over and shoot, uh, two automatic machine guns at the camera as I fall backwards off a 75 ft platform. And that was the first day.

First day. Are you doing your stunts? Are you you're very hands-on in that world? I'd imagine you are. You're not.

No, no, no. God bless Tom Cruise. No. I have a great stunt man. Honestly, if you need somebody that look like me, Aaron Tony is the best He's a Capuera, martial arts, Jujitsu, Kung Fu expert. He has a weapon license for his hands because they're lethal weapons. That's how much of a trick killer he is.

That's impressive.

Yeah. Imagine Chuck Norris but look like me.

Got it. Got it. Um, so that's good then. You didn't have to do your stunts.

No, no, no. Every time it became difficult or they would ask me to do something, I would literally tap him in. There was this one scene where the car is going down the highway at 60 miles an hour. He had to jump out of the car on the door, hit the pavement and roll to a complete stop. And they looked at me. I was like And that's no CGI. Aaron Tony. Let's get in there. No CGI.

When you finally see it on the screen. I mean, flying must be Bring him in. Bring him in. Yeah. That must be a cool moment to just sit there and watch and say, that's me right now.

Oh, hell yeah. No, it was when I first saw the movie, I literally just cheered at the screen the entire time. Cause it's crazy. Like when we were on set, they put these little wings on you, right? So, I have on my costume, I'm looking hardcore. And then they put they put like these wings. They clip them on my back. So, I'm walking around with these wings this big, right? So, I'm like, yo, just don't make me look stupid. Because if the movie comes out and my wings are that big, Right. Right. I'm going to look stupid. You know what I mean? So, then, you know, the CGI

From fairy to Falcon.

Just pretty much stupid. That's it. But yeah, they they worked it out in CGI and it looks amazing. I mean, I was I'm really proud of the way the character has evolved and how he comes across in the movie. It's incredible.

Have you had have you had like if you put it on at home? Have you got a screen of yourself?

No. They wouldn't no, no, no. Marvel would never do that because they give me a screener. I'm straight up going to the barbershop and selling it. I've got one. Right. And they know it so they won't give me one. Right. Or just having screenings at women's women's meetings. Guys, have you seen this? This is me. Excuse me, ladies. This is me. Yeah. Have you heard of Falcon? That's me. I'm going to make me unleash the Falcon. I can fly.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Um, and the Avengers, will you be part of that now?

I hope so. Um, everyone no one will tell me anything. You know, Marvel is very secretive. Right. So, I'm just waiting to get the nod and they tell me, you know, if if you and all your viewers go see the movie and say we need the Falcon, they'll probably put me in. But you know, Robert Downey Jr. has in his contract that they can't be two flying Avengers, so it's a problem.

Is that true?

No.

You've told me before when we've been sitting here, you're a massive fan of plays and the stage and stuff like that. Definitely. How does that compare now you've done something as big as, you know, as a big movie like this, you still do you still love to get back to the stage?

Definitely. I'm um, I'm in the process of looking for a play to do now. I mean, there's nothing like the theater. It's a lifestyle. You know, the theater is a very small close-knit community, be it in New York or London or wherever. So, it's just it's really fun to be a part of it and do it.

And your story of getting into acting, we we we touch base on it, uh, at the start. But yeah, you're an engineer and and now look.

It's it's been crazy, man. Yeah. My brother was studying. My brother was working on his PhD at Georgia Tech. And, you know, I was like, man, I want to go into engineering too. So, I got into this uh, engineering program that was going to take me into college to be engineer to be an engineer. And I realized it just wasn't it wasn't my thing. It was very uh, isolated. And I did my first play and in the play, it was King Lear, right? So, I come out at the end and I'm like, oh my brother Edgar. And we get in this huge sword fight. He stabs me. And the moment he stabbed me, about four girls in the audience jumped up and screamed, Anthony, no. And that was it. That was it, your soul. Walked off the stage. I'm done. Done. Bing. Dropped the sword. That was it. That was it. Decision night.

And now he's the Falcon. Just shows you Hollywood. Dreams can come true.
