Tyrese Gibson on New Album, Fast & Furious, & Working With Snoop Dogg on 1992

Thank you. It's so, it's nothing sad, so don't hold your breath. It's life changing. So what happens to me, I want to explain my personality. Whenever I get overwhelmed with joy, I calm down and I kind of shut down and I get kind of monotone like, did that just happen? So, I am literally pulling up to this interview and I get this text message and I'm going to let you read it. The executive producer of The Beautiful Pain album is produced by Brandon Bam Hodge, and executive produced by David Foster, including produced the title song, the 1992 film, as soon as the credits start rolling, you hear a song called Wildflower, a song for mama. So when he finally got a chance to listen to the full album from top to bottom, uninterrupted, this is the text message David Foster just wrote me. Can you please share that with the world?

Well, I just want to start by saying the contact, it's a P and it's producer David Foster. This is a world premiere. This is why this is the biggest show in Hollywood, okay? Okay? The show doesn't stop. The location changes, but the show doesn't change, okay? Please.

He starts with, okay. I am totally blown away. Two exclamation points. It just took me back in time. It just took me back. It just took me back in time, meaning listening to the album. Two more exclamation points. The songs, the lyrics, the chord changes and the vocals. Capital letters. Now I see why this has consumed your life. Man, it is just so, so, so, so f-ing, which he said, great. Okay, we're done. We're done. We're done. Okay, that's it. I don't want to read the rest. Let me see. It's amazing. More exclamation points. And more. Oh, oh, oh, oh, I I'll read the last part. I didn't want to put too much personal business out there. David Foster, I apologize. This is not normal for me to get these type of text messages. He said, T. G. , I get it now why you're so obsessed with this album. Where the hell did you learn to do that? Yes, a concept album like we all used to love before we were born. My god, man. You have just entered The Twilight Zone and you took me with you. Bravo, bravo. That's why I'm sitting here just overwhelmed. That's David Foster. That's David Foster, Quincy Jones, Quincy Jones, David Foster, David Foster, Quincy Jones. And he produced my current single with my other producer, Brandon, that he released 50 years ago this year, called Wildflower, which is dedicated to my mother, rest in peace. Other people have done other versions of Wildflower, but David Foster never went back in the studio to do something that he did 50 years ago. So, I think you get it, right?

I get it. And you've been in the Hollywood game for a long time. You're a huge movie star, a musician. You're an artist. You're an author. But then to get, but then when you get a text message like that, no matter how long you've been in the game, to get a message like that is still

How did it go?

It's incredible. I can't repeat the conversation, but if I could tell you how I feel, I feel like I just want to go home and go to sleep for like three days. Because my album is coming out. It's entitled, Beautiful Pain. I was married. She just woke up one day and decided she doesn't want to be married anymore, which I still don't understand to this day. It's life. I don't want anybody to cry me a river. You'll be okay, Tyrese. I got it. No. I got married to do it for the rest of my life. So here I am now giving birth to an album that I never asked for. Singing lyrics that I never wanted to sing. Tapping into vulnerabilities and sentiments that I never thought I would have. And now David Foster is the executive producer of my overall album. And so as I'm spiraling in this trauma, shock, confusion, I'm asking God to send me validations and send me these moments to to make me feel like, oh, you went through all of that because of this. I want to make history. I'm doing this all literally from the trunk of my car. It feels like uh, the 60s, the 80s, selling albums out the trunk of your car. We're doing vinyls. I'm doing it all independent. And if we come home with 12 Grammys, it's going to be the biggest uh, without even pulling up the finger. Y'all can put a, I want y'all to put a fuzz on top of my hands without me ever putting the finger up. Because this is a double album that's been misunderstood. It's live, it's vulnerable, it's honest. Um, it has nothing to do with autotune. It has nothing to do with anything that you hear on the radio today, which is why after 10 attempts, I have not been able to get a record deal. Imagine that. But we got David Foster and Tyrese in the same sentence. You just did a deal with Lil Tay Tay, Lil Ray Ray, Lil J. J. , Lil K. K. , Lil May May, because their streaming numbers is off the charts. Tyrese, no deal. But I got David Foster. And we got David Foster, Wildflower dedicated to my mom, also on the 1992 soundtrack. And it's the first song you hear as soon as the credits start rolling. And we might come home with a Oscar because of it. No deal, but 12 Grammys. Take that, buddy. Sorry.

Well, first of all, thank you. I'm humbled and I'm grateful. Cuz you did not have to say those words. I do not take love or my access for granted. My answer is I'm not really good in the department of being married, which is why I'm giving birth to Beautiful Pain on Friday, August 30th. The same day that 1992 is dropping, we're releasing this double album that I wish everyone else would have released but me. I have went out of my way to play this album actually for married couples. People that are dating, people that are engaged and they have all either cried full on in the studio session, cuz the album is not sad. It's one of those albums that's like, oh my god, it's so honest, it's so raw, it's so vulnerable. People have also said to me that when they've left the house, they'll either pull over in a random parking lot and start hugging each other and crying or they'll just start apologizing like, what are we fighting about? Cuz you know, the worst arguments are the reoccurring arguments. This album made Snoop Dogg and his wife slow dance to my studio for hour and half. And they've been together since high school. They were high school prom sweethearts. His wife was wiping his tears because the song that David Foster produced with Brandon uh called Wildflower is dedicated to my mother who passed on Valentine's Day and my mother and his mother were the best of friends. His wife is sitting to his right and he's like crying and he's hunched over and he's wiping his tears and she's wiping his tears. And he's rubbing on my mama's ashes and something something told Snoop that maybe I was giving him this box with my mother's ashes in it as a gift. Because his mama and my mama were the best of friends. So you know what Snoop did? I left the room to go get a bottle of water for everybody in the room. I came back. And when I came back in the room, he's like, man, we got to get out of here, man. We got a Zoom call. And I swore that I seen that blue box with my mama's ashes on the couch. And I called Snoop. It was the most uncomfortable phone call I've ever made in my life. And I said, Snoop, did you take my mama's ashes, bro? He denied it. He looked everywhere. He claims. He could not find it. No one in the world has ever heard this story. This is a Young Hollywood exclusive. A year later, his wife found the backpack that he had at my house. And they both called me and sent the video. And I can tell that him and his wife they feel bad. But him and his wife called to say, bro, you will not believe this, but my wife found your mama, bro. She found your mama's ashes. And I was like, wow. First, I wasn't even mad. I was just happy, right? And then the second thing was, he was like, can you please come to the studio, which is their LAX. And I live deep in the Valley like West Lake level deep. Far. And he's like, can you please come to the house to the to the studio because me and my wife are on our way to Hawaii. Private planes waiting and we want to give you this in your hands before we go to Hawaii for the next eight, ten days. Whatever. And I couldn't get there in time. So they took my mama with them to Hawaii. And they gave me the box when I got back. And when I got back, he gave me the blue box and that's today that he said yes to coming on board as a producer to 1992. Go see the movie. I mean, is there a better story that can get you into box office to sit in there and watch 1992? I'm out of here.
