About this video

The fan enthusiasm for Freeform's long-running drama series "Pretty Little Liars" has not eased up a bit since it bowed in 2017, and the spinoff "The Perfectionists" is living proof! The hype is realer than ever, so needless to say we are psyched to welcome stars Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse back to the Young Hollywood Studio -- not the first time for either, but the first time together! These real-life pals talk about how relieved they are to finally be playing friends on-screen as well, after years of their characters, Mona and Alison, being at each other's throats! Janel shares with us a fond memory from her first day of filming the new show, and Sasha discusses the opportunity to continue to explore new sides to her characters. What's going on guys? Hanging with me right now, I have Janelle and Sasha. Hello ladies. How are you?

Janel Parrish

We are good.

Sasha Pieterse

Welcome back.

Janel Parrish

Thanks for having us.

Sasha Pieterse

We missed you.

Young Hollywood

We missed you too. Really? Oh, so sweet. It's our first time having you guys together. So this is super fun.

Janel Parrish

I know. We're excited.

Sasha Pieterse

Yes.

Young Hollywood

Well, we're gonna just jump right in. Congratulations you guys.

Janel Parrish

Thank you.

Sasha Pieterse

Thank you.

Young Hollywood

The perfectionist.

Janel Parrish

How's it been?

Sasha Pieterse

So fun. It's amazing. We've been having a blast. We've had almost too much fun.

Janel Parrish

Yeah. Mhm.

Sasha Pieterse

Lots of giggle fits on set. But um, it's been amazing.

Janel Parrish

It's true. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. Well, you guys are so cute. You can tell what their friendship is like legit, so it's real.

Sasha Pieterse

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Okay. Well, I did get a lot of fan questions on social and I want to get to them all if we can. Let's see. Sorry. We're gonna jump right in, okay? Okay, here we go. What would be the best way to describe Mona and Allison's friendship? I love seeing you guys on screen together. You're so funny.

Janel Parrish

Thank you.

Sasha Pieterse

Our relationship on the show is kind of like an old married couple.

Janel Parrish

Yes.

Sasha Pieterse

We very much bicker.

Janel Parrish

Absolutely.

Sasha Pieterse

We hold each other accountable.

Janel Parrish

Mhm.

Sasha Pieterse

And there's love. There is love. It's an unusual love.

Janel Parrish

Yes. We we've had quite the history together.

Sasha Pieterse

Yes. But um, it's been really fun for us.

Janel Parrish

Oh yeah.

Sasha Pieterse

As Janelle and Sasha to be able to um, play nice.

Janel Parrish

I know. And actually yeah. Finally.

Sasha Pieterse

Find a relationship between Mona and Allison and and explore that because we've always gotten along so well off camera. And we had to play enemies for so long and now we actually get to be friends.

Janel Parrish

I do appreciate our slap scenes though.

Sasha Pieterse

Oh, that was cool. I have to say. That was awesome.

Janel Parrish

Yeah, those were fun. They should just put one in a season. Yeah. You know, like next season I'll slap you for something. You know. But it'll be out of love.

Sasha Pieterse

It's true. We love to slap because we we both slapped each other the first time. And I slapped you so you need you need to.

Janel Parrish

Yes. You need to slap me now.

Sasha Pieterse

I plan on it. I was like physical touch a little bit of love language between each other.

Janel Parrish

Absolutely.

Sasha Pieterse

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

I love it. Okay. Next one. What was your favorite scene to film? Love you.

Janel Parrish

Oh, thank you.

Sasha Pieterse

Thank you. I think I might have to go with the pie scene for a couple reasons. It was our first day.

Janel Parrish

Yes. We're gonna have to say, it was our first day.

Sasha Pieterse

It was our first scene together which was amazing. Yeah. But also we we laughed so much about the pie. I It's so annoying when you're trying to do a scene, remember your lines, deliver it. But then you have this inanimate object that keeps pissing you off. The props had to cut the pie perfectly. And then I had to perfectly like scoop it and put it on the plate quietly and it kept crumbling and falling down. We were laughing. Eventually our director came in and was like, you know what? With this shot it's gonna be above the pie. Just don't touch the pie. Like great. Take it.

Young Hollywood

What are you talking about your first scene?

Sasha Pieterse

Yes. Okay, okay. Yes. So the pie was a pie that was temperamental.

Janel Parrish

Yes, it was.

Sasha Pieterse

But still somehow my favorite scene because it's a good memory. We laughed a lot.

Janel Parrish

Absolutely.

Young Hollywood

I love it. Next one. Tell Janelle to describe Mona's love interest in one word. Maybe you both can.

Janel Parrish

Ooh. One word. Charming.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. You agree with that?

Sasha Pieterse

I do agree with that. Yeah. Mhm. Um, in one word, let me see if I can find a without giving unexpected.

Young Hollywood

Ooh. Charming and unexpected. Queen of the teasers. I love that. Queen of the teasers. New hashtag guys. Work on it.

Sasha Pieterse

That's true. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Okay. This next one for Sasha. I feel like we've been seeing a more selfless side to Allison on PLL the perfectionist. What's it been like to play that and kind of help/look out after these new characters?

Sasha Pieterse

It's been a lot of fun. It has been very different. So I what I've always felt like with Allison is I've never been bored. There's so many different sides to her uh, over the years. I've gotten to do some crazy things. And this is no exception. Like it really has been so fun creating a different side of her. And she is really selfless. And I think she just sees herself in these characters. But you know, she's always in trouble. She's never boring. I'm not I'm not a boring character now. Now it's like a whole different different side to her and and um, I think the wisdom is kind of fun.

Young Hollywood

Well, it's fun to see her kind of like come out a little bit. Like the bring on I'm not going to say that last word. The old Ali come out when she needs to. You know how to B is back.

Sasha Pieterse

The B is back. Hashtag B is back.

Young Hollywood

When you have to bring out those teeth, you do. It's amazing.

Sasha Pieterse

Yeah. Just with more discretion.

Young Hollywood

There you go. A little bit more controlled. There we go. We'll say that. Next one, ask them what they've learned from their characters. Please and thank you.

Sasha Pieterse

I think I've learned from her that, you know, you need to choose the people around you wisely. Um, and yes. And she's grown a lot which has been really fun to see. But I think surrounding yourself with people, you know, basically Allison just said it that feel like family. Yeah. You yeah. That's a it's the family you choose. So choosing wisely. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

I love that.

Janel Parrish

Mona has definitely taught me a lot of things not to do. You're right. Like don't hit your friends with cars. Don't stalk people. Don't like, you know, keep people trapped underground. It's dolls expire after a certain age. Yes. Like all those things. But if I had to take one thing from her. Um I guess I've learned a little bit uh bigger words. Yeah. I've had to Google a lot of her words, you guys. That's true. She constantly they give me these paragraphs of tongue twisters, all these words that I have to Google. So thank you Mona for making me smarter.

Young Hollywood

And your calculations? Do you actually know what I do?

Janel Parrish

I did not memorize. I mean, I memorized it but I don't know what any of that meant. I really don't. I remember how it looked that's it.

Young Hollywood

Right. Well, there you go. That's all you need to do. Okay. Next one. What's the best part of your job?

Sasha Pieterse

Being able to create and and play in a wonderful environment, I would say.

Janel Parrish

Yeah. We've been very lucky with that. Like we have such a wonderful loving cast and crew. And it feels like such a safe place to come every day and play. Yeah. And try things and be vulnerable.

Sasha Pieterse

I've been able to play so many different kinds of characters. And I think that's my favorite part about my job is putting myself in other people's shoes and not just making people happy. Obviously that's that's a plus but making people feel things. Feeling different things that that, you know, they don't either normally feel or you get to kind of take people out of their comfort zones or you get to to distract them from, you know, all the crazy things that we have in this world. So, yeah.

Janel Parrish

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

I love that. Me too. I love that. Okay. Last one. Are we going to learn more about Emison?

Sasha Pieterse

It's a hard one for me. The filming that the scene about her finally signing the divorce papers. That was really sad. Um, and I knew that it was going to be really hard for all of us. It was hard for me filming it. It was hard to see people's reaction. Um, and just yeah, my my reaction in general was really sad as well. I think there's different seasons in life and Allison is going through a really hard time in her life. Um, there's a reason she's in Beacon Heights. It's not to desert her family or her her very close friends. It's to become a better person so that she can do better so she can teach as a professor at Hall or at Hollis. Beacon Heights Hollis. to go back to Rosewood and and be a better mom and a better friend and a better person. So she's trying to figure all of her stuff out. And I think, I mean, what I've always appreciated about PLL is is that, you know, even though we're kind of living in this crazy hyper reality, the realistic parts about it are the relationships and how they're formed. And the truth is, nothing is ever perfect and you go through hard things in life. And I think this is a perfect example where it's not always a happy ending. It doesn't mean that it can't be in the future, but right now this is Allison dealing with her problems.

Young Hollywood

Wow, Janelle. I think Did you want to add Janelle?

Janel Parrish

I know. I was like, that was honestly a beautiful answer. Sums up the show perfectly. So we'll leave it at that. I know. And I think there's still a lot of love there. Absolutely. You can love somebody and have things not work out. And it's sad but it is part of life. And I think it's something that as sad as it is, it's something that's very relatable on the show.

Young Hollywood

Totally. Well, thank you guys so much for hanging out. You guys are the best.

Janel Parrish

Thanks.

Sasha Pieterse

Thanks.
