Magnum P.I., MacGyver, & Hawaii Five-0 Stars Talk Possible Crossovers

Hey Young Hollywood. We are here at the Dolby Theater for PaleyFest where we are going to be checking in with the cast of CBS's three iconic reboots, Magnum PI, MacGyver and Hawaii Five-O. We've got MacGyver in the building. How are you doing today?

Yeah, I'm all right. Not too bad.

They're all here for you.

Well, let's, they're all here for all of us. A lot of them are here for you.

Nine seasons. How you doing?

I always try to get a moment of reflection at these things. I'm like, well, it's fascinating that we have been able to sort of crack this nut and keep cracking it for so long and they're talking about a 10 now and it's looking good and so it's, I'm, I feel, I feel grateful, man. I'm fortunate.

How does it feel to be a part of such a successful show that also has roots?

When I got into the business 20 years ago, you hoped and prayed that at one point in your career you could be part of a show that that that lasts. Maybe makes it to 100 episodes. So the fact that we've made it to 200 and beyond is it's, uh, it's pretty surreal and it's pretty special because our show is sort of a dying breed. Uh, you're not going to see many more cross that 200 episode mark. You know, moving forward. So it's pretty special, it's pretty unique and, uh, and just feel lucky to be a part of it.

The energy of the island is a very, very special thing. It's, I haven't experienced anything like it. So, we're, we're very welcomed. You, you get the Ohana feeling straight away when you get onto the island, with the cast, with the crew and our friends. So, we, we were made welcome straight away.

MacGyver has such strong female characters. And that's due to a lot in part of Peter's writing. But how is that been for you? How do you, how do you kind of riff off of each other when you're on screen?

It's really nice, actually. I think, I grew up with women, so it's, it's easy for me to do.

Meredith kind of joked that she's everybody's mom on set. She really is. It's not a joke, she really is everybody's mom. And we're all actors, so we're all nuts. So she's a great therapist, too. We all go to her with our problems and she is an ex, she's great at giving advice. She's amazing. She went to school for psycho, psychotherapy. Yeah. She dealt with the criminally insane at one point. So,

So she has, she has the background for the show. Correct. What's it like playing such strong women on the show?

Well, I think it's fantastic because girls need role models that are strong. Girls need to see that women can be assertive and powerful and rule the world and run the world. And still be sexy at the same time. You go back, girl.

So, watching you guys over there, it seems like you two are having a lot of fun off screen. So, I mean, it only translates into your character's relationship on screen.

I think a lot of that chemistry that you see is because we actually all like live together for a couple months. In Hawaii.

This guy learned how to surf.

Did you really?

Yeah, I mean, I learned a little bit from him. I can't really.

Did you teach him?

Well, I can't take the credit really. Eli Olson, he's a professional surfer and lives over there. He did a lot of work with Steve. I, you know, I grew up surfing and I get to, I get to hang out and surf with guys I was reading about in Surfer Magazine when I was a kid. So. Pretty, pretty great job. Yeah, yeah, that's, that's kind of more, that's when I get star struck.

The fans just want to know if they'll be seeing more of Mac and Eddie.

Oh man, he's such a great dog. Yeah, I mean, I don't know, that's a Peter Lenkov question. I love Eddie so much. It's hard working with a dog, man. It's like most actors, you just go, go there and say that and don't bump into the couch and they're sort of like, whoa. But dogs are, dogs and babies, they're really hard.

You guys, uh, interested in doing a MacGyver crossover?

Well, I'm sure that the writers have their, um, have their sights set on taking advantage of every opportunity they can to Absolutely. Put these shows together. So who knows? I mean, I'm, I'm, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

Hopefully, next year we, we'll get to do some more crossovers. But I really want to cross over with everyone else as well. Like, it would be a MacGyver crossover. That would be very cool.

Yeah, they should definitely come and hang out and visit. You know, I think, uh, for Peter Lenkov, all these shows do exist in the same universe. So I'm happy, uh, to do a crossover with MacGyver as long as they come to us and we don't have to fly from Hawaii all the way to Atlanta.

Yeah. I think that they'd be happy to come to Hawaii. I'm sure they would.

I believe they've already done something but I imagine it as like the TV, our little, our little humble Avengers or something where everyone can come together in some big episode. Maybe the, maybe the finale of Five-O one year or something like that, we're all in it, but, um, I think it'd be really cool.
