Pad Crashin' with Hunter Parrish

Lights camera action! Ding-a-ling-a-ling. What's up, Young Hollywood? I'm Kyle Schrumman, and right now we're about to crash the pad of Hunter Parish who happens to play Silas Bodwen on the hit TV series Weeds. He also happens to be my roommate. Like, yes, we have a key. Hunter. Maybe he forgot we were coming, actually. Let's go find out. This is his room, right here. Hey, dude. Hey, Hunter. Hey, Hunter. Hey, dude. See, he's still sleeping. Hey, come on, buddy. It's time for your Young Hollywood interview. What the heck?

Young Ho- Young Hollywood interview. Oh, dude, I'm ready. I'm excited. I'm so excited. Look, I wore my, my mic to bed and everything.

Oh, perfect. Perfect, so we can hear you already.

Hi, Young Hollywood. Welcome to my bedroom. This is my bedroom.

Hey, dude, I'm kind of hungry.

I'm really hungry, too, actually. Let's go make some breakfast. Let's do it. I'm gonna change first, though. So, you guys can't come

Yeah, that's what I want to see. Watch me change.

I've been naked enough on TV. Okay, bye bye.

Hunter. I'm coming, man. Changed? I'm coming. Oh, good, good, good. That's better. Yeah. Come on, rush, make my breakfast.

I've been making eggs all day. Hard-boiled eggs. How long do they sit for, typically? Uh, well, you gotta, uh, let 'em sit for like at least a week 'cause otherwise the, uh, the shells are hard to get off. That's a little trick I learned. So, you break the egg apart. So, you break the egg apart and then you take out the yolk 'cause I gotta be all healthy. I can't eat all that fat, you know. So, the majority of the fat is in the yolk. And then you put it in the blender. And then we're gonna do five eggs today 'cause these are the small ones. I usually just do three. I know normal people don't put their eggs in the blender but well, the hard-boiled ones anyway. But I do. Okay. Yeah. Perfect. See? So, it's like scrambled egg whites, kind of. But then here's really the good part. We're gonna keep the yolk in there. But don't tell my trainer. Okay. Now it's gonna get all yellowy and golden. Yeah, look at that. So, that's that. Then we get out our, uh, Ezekiel 49 bread, cinnamon raisin. White bread, you gotta have wheat flour. Then we put it in our little toaster thing here. Then we toast it up. Oh, yeah. Look at that. Perfectly blended egg mush. Hey, Kyle, can you get me some mustard?

Mustard? No problem. What do you want? There's like eight kinds in here.

Oh, we need that butter, too. Smart Balance.

Really? Okay.

Gotta use your Smart Balance. All right. So, next step with the eggs here. We're gonna take our eggs. Don't get mustard on you. That's what my mom always said 'cause it stains. But hey, see, look at that. Oh, yeah. I don't like eggs, so I like a lot of mustard.

So, you mush the eggs and mustard together for a little bit?

Yeah. And, and then you make it one big patty of egg mustard-ness. Okay, a little bit of this. Uh, pepper. Some salt.

So, is this what you typically eat before doing a scene in, like, Weeds, for example, where you have to show your butt?

Oh, yeah. About that. Yeah, see, this is why I'm able to take my clothes off on TV. You can even follow along, actually. If you repeat these steps, you can follow along at home and make your own egg Hunter egg sandwich. Yeah. Call it. What is there like a special name? The Hunter egg sandwich. This is exactly what I've been calling it. Ah. Did you hear that? Ready to go. Here we go. Ah. Oh, it smells so good. Smells up the whole house. All right. Now, take some Smart Balance. Put a little bit on there. So, maybe traditionally that was more butter than we should probably put for the health-conscious.

Health-conscious, but for the taste-conscious, I'm gonna put a lot of butter in it. All right.

And then, look at that. Oh, my gosh. Oh, egg. Just load it up on the, on the toast. And mustard. Yeah, buddy. All right. That looks great. That looks really good.

Dude, are you ready? I don't know if you're ready.

I'm totally ready.

Can you sing a song to be ready?

Ooh. Come on. Do a little jig. A jig is different. All right. I'll sing one. Why don't you sing one?

I don't think you're ready for this eggy. I don't think you're ready for this eggy. I don't think you're ready for this. Your body is bootylicious for you, baby. Right? And now. Cheers, dude. To a fantastic eggy. Protein. Protein. And butts. On Weeds. Mm. That. Mm. Mm. So good. How'd you get started out here, man?

Well, I came out when I was 16. So, I've been acting since I was six. I grew up in Texas. I got a film like right after I got here and so I was like, all right, I guess I'll stay.

So, how did you originally get Weeds, anyway?

Oh, yeah. You know, um, I got Weeds like a year after I got here and I was, I sent in a tape from, from my hometown in Plano, Texas where I grew up. And I got this call saying, you know, we want you to come, come to LA. And me, I just thought, wow, you know, I'm gonna go, but I'm gonna be like, you know, there's gonna be, you know, 15 of the people. And I get there. It's like between me and two other guys. And, uh, you know, I just, I, you know, I went in, I did my thing and I guess I did something right because they liked me. They're probably regretting the choice now.

But, uh, playing the role of Silas with all these other big, cool actors that you've worked with. How do you, how do you think it's changed, kinda, your way of acting? Have they taught you anything? Have you learned anything from like Mary Louise Parker?

Not much. I mean, they don't have much to offer. Um, really. No, I'm just kidding. I, I, I love 'em. I love, you know, it's, we're like a family now. It's been amazing. I mean, to watch, yeah, Mary Louise and Elizabeth Perkins and, um, um, Justin Kirk has been one of my closest friends. And as you know, hang out with him a lot. This year, we got to work with Kevin Neal a lot more. And, uh, he is like one of the coolest, funniest guys and makes everything super easy.

Now, you've played all these cool roles. You've played like Stan in 17 Again, he's kinda like badass guy. And then probably like a nicer kid in It's Complicated. So, what's your hardest role that you've played?

I don't know about hard, but I would definitely say like one of my most fun, uh, parts was playing Stan because he's so different from me and he's so like, he's like this evil, kinda, not evil, but, you know, just sort of, uh, confused, hardened, you know, uh, stupid high school jock kid. When we, uh, dyed my hair blonde and, um, put, you know, this tattoo on my neck. And Burr wanted me to, like, you know, have like mascara on and dark things and a couple of things here and there. But I really had a lot of fun like making that character, um, be as far from myself as possible and sort of like, I wanted people to get the idea that, or, you know, try and see that it wasn't Hunter up there, that it was this other, you know, kid. Some people told me that it was like, you know, they didn't recognize me at first. So that was pretty fun.

I'm his best friend and I didn't recognize him. So. It was that crazy of a role to actually see Hunter play. If you weren't acting, would you be doing something instead?

Man, that's tricky. I don't know if I could survive if I didn't get to do my job. But I, um, yeah, you know, I think you make your own happiness. So, you'd find it. If I wasn't able to do this, find something else to do and get excited about. I sing and I do music stuff. So, um, so, maybe I could be a lawyer or, uh, you know, uh, psychologist, something like that. But it's more fun here. Maybe a cook, you know. Come on. Aside from that, it's pretty good.

Besides doing Weeds and, and acting in all these big movies and singing, what do you do, uh, for fun on, on the side?

Oh, I do a lot of things. I like to go to the beach and, you know, we got mountains like an hour away. But right here at home, which is the best part, I, uh, with you, uh, and, and my good friend Allison Tyler, we do a little, uh, radio show. It's live, called Two Guys and a Girl. And it's live. And, uh, with Twitter now, we got people listening all the time and, um, uh, uh, but it's great 'cause I don't have to go anywhere and I can wear my bare feet to work. And, uh, it's just upstairs. Actually, you guys wanna take a, you guys wanna take a look at the, we should show them. You guys wanna, wanna take a look at the studio? We're doing a show today, anyway.
