I've got this girdle on here and uh it's not 'cause I'm conscious of my love handles, I actually um I actually compressed my spine on Friday. Last year I rode X Games with a broken hand and got a silver medal and this year I I can't ride with an injured back.

Young Hollywood

Welcome to Young Hollywood. Hey guys, Jessica here for Young Hollywood. X Games are in town and so are we. We're here at the DC showroom to catch up with some of the athletes. Hey guys, we're here with Dave Mirra. Tell me a little bit about what's going on today.

Dave Mirra

Well, we're here at the DC store in Melrose and uh there's a lot of top athletes here. Ken Block, Danny Way, you know, some people that I looked up to and and being here with those guys signing is pretty awesome. A lot of fans, it was a line all the way down the block, so uh not that it was only traffic, but it was actually, you know, people standing in line. So it was all it was all crowded around here, but it was awesome really.

Young Hollywood

You're not doing BMX anymore. Tell me a I mean tell me why 'cause you're like literally the legend of BMX, so

Dave Mirra

You know what, it it's cool. I've done it. Um, you know, I I love it. I still love riding. I love, you know, practicing the events, but I could ride six months and go to an event and still ride at a top level. But my mind's not in where it used to be or where those guys are. I know what it takes to win and and to see the young guys so determined and committed. It it's awesome. So my opportunity to drive for Subaru and be here racing you know, the the rally car event and the rally cross event at X Games is just it it's mind-blowing 'cause it's a huge opportunity and it's kind of switching gears and trying something new and you know, we'll see what happens.

Young Hollywood

Hey guys, I'm sitting here with Ken Block. How are you today?

Ken Block

Excellent.

Young Hollywood

Tell me a little bit about your car 'cause that car is pretty badass.

Ken Block

Yeah, well this is the car that my team just recently built for me to race. That's an amazing, amazing little car. It's a uh Ford Fiesta that's the basis of its uh the world rally car that I race in the World Rally Championship, but it's heavily modified so that I can do these other competitions here in the States. So it's a really good little toy. I can't wait to uh race it this weekend in X Games.

Young Hollywood

How many times have you wrecked your parents' car? And you were like, "No, it's practice. I'm gonna do it for a living." Really?

Ken Block

Well, I never actually wrecked any of my parents' cars. I wrecked my own cars. Uh, but I the funny thing is I got arrested when I was like 17 for jumping my car. There was just this nice little bridge uh that if you hit it at the right speed you caught a lot of air and the Mr. Policeman didn't appreciate what I was doing.

Young Hollywood

You had the popo chasing you.

Ken Block

Yeah, threw me in the slammer.

Young Hollywood

Hey guys, I'm sitting here with Robbie Maddison. How are you tonight?

Robbie Maddison

I am I'm good. Now you were just telling me about a injury. Tell everybody about it 'cause that is the craziest thing. Uh, I've got this girdle on here and uh it's not 'cause I'm conscious of my love handles. I actually um I actually compressed my spine on Friday and it's just been unfortunate at the road to X Games to me just it all started two weeks ago. I had a really bad crash, had a head injury, and um had multiple impact syndrome. The multiple impact syndrome, you know, it just affected the way my brain was functioning and that kind of put all my neuromuscular circuitry out and and before I knew it, you know, I I had 10 days off the bike and you know, first ride back I lasted five minutes, landed a just kinda normally and my back went out. And um, you know, I've realized that my whole kinda atlas is off and my neurological patterns are out and and my, you know, I just need downtime. I've taken a beating the last couple of months and uh, I've got um, rotated discs and they've been fixed up um, and you know, I had an MRI and my head's all clear, but it's just been it's been a gnarly few weeks, you know, and my body's just yelling at me to just give it a break and I gotta listen to it at this point, you know. Like last year I rode X Games with a broken hand and got a silver medal and this year I I can't ride with an injured back. You know, I just I got a lot of friends who are paraplegics, quadriplegics. You know, I've had friends die of spinal injuries and and uh, you know, when it comes to the spine, you gotta be wise. So, I'm just backing it off this this weekend. It comes with a lot of regret and I apologize to my fans and sponsors, but uh, I'm just gonna take a lesson from this one, build my back so it's super strong. Next time you see me I'll be a buff man and and I'll be indestructible, hopefully. I'm Robbie Maddison and you're watching Young Hollywood.
