I'm here with Ike Barinholtz, the star of Neighbors. What up, Austin, South by Young Hollywood. How are you gonna play air pong with sunglasses on? Are you feeling confident about that?
It's gonna be a little shady. Let me tell you something. I've never been more confident that I'm gonna beat you in pong.
Really? You ready? Uh, you know the rules, right?
Uh, shh, I'm in Neighbors, May 9th, theaters everywhere. We're neighbors. Oh. Why don't we judge? Is that a fraternity? We have to go over there. We've got to be cool. And we say, "By the way, keep it down." Well, we won't say it like that. Just like, "Keep it down." What are you doing with this? Keep it down. Just don't, we've overworked it. Just want to say, "Welcome to the hood." You're welcome. Also, if you can maybe just Keep it down. Anyway, make sure if we're too noisy, call me first. Don't call the cops.
Okay. I'll go tell them to shh. Are you ready for a show? Just did this Q&A.
Yes. The boy square. Yes. It was. There was gaggles of screaming girls. I'm so used to that though. Everywhere I go. You know. Yeah, and, and some people were saying, "Oh no, they were there for Efron and Dave Franco," but that's not true. They were there for me. They're a fan of not just my acting, but my Twitter feed and my humanitarian work.
Why don't you throw out that Twitter handle.
Oh, oh, uh, @IkeBarinholtz. There you go. See it. Oh now these girls are gonna start screaming. I should have just stopped.
They're, they're basically using Zac to get to you.
That's what I'm saying and I look so much like him, it's confusing.
For real, what is it like hearing 15,000, 15-year-olds?
It's crazy. They were, I felt like I was in the pink, uh, the Beatles, but I was like, not even Ringo, I was like Ringo's friend, you know what I mean? It was like, "That's my friend." Um, so yeah, it was really insane. They were just, that was utter madness. Dave Franco, Zac Efron.
And they fed you.
And the hot guys. And they fed us Subway. So.
For dinner.
For dinner. Say that five times fast.
I love it. I love it. For Jesus, for Jesus. Please, for Jesus, for Jesus, please. So, um, while I'm aiming,
Yes.
give me an epic filming story. An epic filming story. Yes, something that's behind the scenes onset.
Um, we smoked a lot of fake weed. Um, so that was, uh, I mean.
Did you inhale?
I did inhale. Uh, I mean, we shot these crazy party scenes that took like forever to shoot. Right. Um, so it felt like you were at like a really fun party with Seth and Zac Efron. That's pretty cool. Yes, so kind of like everyday was epic right there.
Cause I know the premise of the story is it's a party that turns into a war, basically.
Basically, Seth and Rose, uh, had this, uh, beautiful little daughter. And, oh.
They would have beautiful children.
They would have beautiful, beautiful children. And, uh, this fraternity moves in next door that's kind of run by Franco. Drink. Uh, yeah, Franco and, uh, Zac Efron and Chris Mintz-Plasse are all members of the frat. And, uh, it at first it's like, "Oh wow, this frat's uh, next door. It's fun." And then it turns into World War III. Call the cops. That will seem so lame. Do it anonymously. It's a good idea. They do our dirty work for us. Oh, no. So let's see how they do. You called about your neighbors? No. We have caller ID. The cops. Everybody has caller ID. You guys just woke a sleeping giant. Welcome to the darkness, bitches. I think the frat broke into the car and stole all the airbags. So weird. Why would they just break in and steal airbags? I don't know, we should follow police. Delta Psi has the upper hand.
Well, you're Seth's best friend in the movie, right?
I'm Seth's best friend in the movie. I'm a complete moron.
No, is there something to do with like, you split up? You know how like you have like your, if you're you and your husband have a friend who's a couple, and then the couple breaks up and you kind of have to choose. And do they choose you or they not choose you?
They choose her, but I forced myself still in there, so it's really.
Okay. You're that guy.
Um, yeah, I'm that guy.
Since this is a love, you know, it goes from love to war.
Yes.
In life, are you a lover or a fighter?
I am a, I, I fight with sex. So I'm a little bit of both. Like I have sex with my enemies. Yes, I mix the two together. And what kind of, did you see that? I just caught, I'm really excited about that. Forget if I got in the cup or not. That wasn't that great. You bounced it once and caught it. You know. Um, yes, no, I'm a lover. I'm a lover.
You're a lover.
Yeah. Definitely.
That's lovely to hear. Thank you. Um, neighbor, are you a good neighbor or?
I am the greatest neighbor in the world.
How so? Oh. Oh. See, you called me out, look what happened.
Uh, I, I like to cook a lot and whenever I cook I, uh, make extra for my, my neighbors and stuff.
Where do you live? Can I move in next door?
I live in Hollywood. You can move next door, but unfortunately.
The house next door to you for sale.
Uh, no, frat just moved in, unfortunately.
You're quiet, you're not like.
No, very quiet. Uh, the one of my favorite lines in the movie is when Seth's like, "Oh yeah, we uh, we get loud too." When Game of Thrones is on we're like, "Ah." Uh, that's me and my wife in a nutshell. We're only loud when we're watching, uh, Breaking Bad or shows of the like.
Do you watch The Mindy Project?
I, I've seen that show a few times. Uh, yes, of course I watch it. You're a writer. It's only the best. Mindy Project. It's only the best comedy on television.
Are you, are you okay watching yourself?
Uh, actually I'm not. Whenever I watch myself I'm like, "Oh wow, they, um, cast like a humongous Romanian woman in that part."
How are we doing? It's I have a two. I have a two. It's tied. You you re-
Um, we're tied, I believe. We are tied. So you just got to reset it so it's like this. Oh wait. So do two and two. Is that how you really play? This is the first time I've actually ever played this before.
Shut up. No, I'm serious. You obviously went to college.
I did not go to college, but my brother did and I would visit him and they would take this very seriously and it's from Chicago. This is a big Chicago pastime.
So I guess that you had the best of all worlds because you got to have that experience, but you didn't have to get up and take a test the next day.
Yes. I got to go and party with college kids and drink and then sleep in.
And did you ever know that was gonna help you prep for your future career?
I didn't, but I wanna go back in time and write off all those trips because it was clearly preparation for the movie.
Maybe you could. Can you go back like seven years or something? I think you can, right?
Just gonna talk to my accountant. Oh, that was close. That was.
So how did the whole, the whole casting, how did that, you know, how did you being a part of the movie?
I actually knew and Oh, I knew Seth. He had come and done an episode of The Mindy Project last season and we just really kind of hit it off. And I heard they're making this movie and I came in and auditioned for it and it just kind of went really well. Basically, uh, I found out like a month later they're like, "Oh yeah," Seth is like, "Uh, I went to dinner with Seth." And he was like, at the end of the dinner he's like, "You know you're doing the movie, right? You're doing that movie." I was like, "Oh no I didn't, but that's really cool."
Who paid for dinner?
Seth.
When you said the audition went well, how do you know if an audition goes well?
Um, you know if I would have no idea. Oh my god, that was a very good shot. Thank you. Sometimes you don't know. Um, but luckily, Seth, um, Nick Stoller and Evan Goldberg have like humongous laughs. So you think you're doing great. Yeah, so when you do say say something all of a sudden you hear like, "Oh." And you're like, "Oh, they they did, uh, know they liked it." So I I walked out feeling good, but you never know. Oh.
All right. I think are we tied up again?
We are tied up again. Hold on.
So tipsy at this point. I don't even. You're. Yeah, I hope you're not driving. Don't drive drunk, kids. I'm just an absolute animal. Take a cab. Wait, did you know this whole thing about like cleaning off the ball?
Yes, you have to. Otherwise you get germs. Disgusting. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Do people really care when we? Actually the first game you care, but then by the third game you're so drunk you're just like, "I don't." Oh my god. So before we go out, can you give me a real life epic party story?
My like 25th birthday party, um, in LA, we had like 500 people show up. And, um, the cops came and at like 2:00 in the morning to break it up.
You are. An animal. Really good.
These cops came and, um, one of them was like a big, burly dude and then there was like this really cute lady cop. And some idiot friend of mine was like, "Oh, they got a stripper." No. I'll tell you something.
Female police officers do not like to be called strippers even in jest.
Oh, God. All right, last throw for both of us.
You underestimated me, didn't you?
I did. You, I think you might have been hustling me a little bit.
I've been practicing all day. Oh, I'm so right. Oh, come on. But I caught it.
You caught it and you win. So wait, I did. Yeah. Three to two. I'm so sorry.
Look, I'm a gracious winner. I get out. Is this cool to say, "I get out," or is that over?
Yeah, the Entourage movie's coming back, so Okay. Just made it back. It's like a flashback. It was a four-year hiatus, but now it's back. It's come full circle. Thanks for chatting with us.
Thank you so much for having me. This was fun. I enjoyed kicking your butt. And I hope if you're interviewing anyone else, you don't get alcohol poisoning.
