Hey guys, it's Tracy with Young Hollywood and I am sitting with the amazing Daya. How are you?
I'm good, how are you?
Um amazing. By the way, I love seeing you because we caught up with you a bunch of times. I think the last was South by Southwest, you were eating funnel cakes.
Ate a lot, a lot of fried stuff at that truck, yeah. And then I like felt it for the rest of the night. I was like performing and I was like, "Uh, no, that was a bad idea."
And when you got we felt bad because like powdered sugar was getting all over you and you were like, "I have to my hands."
It's totally worth it. The fried Oreos were amazing.
Right? Yeah. And then we are at the Pandora Summer Bash concert, you're performing. We were just talking about it.
Yeah, I'm super excited. You just saw a bunch of fans already outside. Yeah, there's a huge line waiting outside and it's just going to be so much fun. It's free, I'm pretty sure. So like a lot of people lined up and there's like thousands of them, I heard.
And you're performing with Five Seconds of Summer and and Fergie, which is gonna be off the hook. I feel like everyone's freaking out. And you've never performed with them, right? It's gonna be fun.
Yeah, no, I've never met or performed with either of them so it should be fine.
Have you been like fans of both of them for a long time?
Yeah, yeah, I love both of their music. Especially Fergie, like old Fergie, yes. I know they say Fergie. Fergie is back. I hope she plays her old hits.
That's so awesome. Um and your music has been streamed over 22 million streams on Pandora just this month, I heard, which is so like how So incredible.
I don't it's just so surreal for me. Like I can't even process that number. It's so huge like it's insane. So yeah, shout out to everyone who's made that happen.
That's amazing. And I feel like this whole year for you has just been like crazy because I mean you have your debut song "Hide Away" which was killing it. I mean everything's platinum, everything's been streamed a million times. I mean you worked with The Chainsmokers, who are also awesome. And your new single, "Sit Still, Look Pretty." There's like a message behind that, right? It's all about kind of like female empowerment, girl power.
Yeah, for sure. It's it's really about just going after your dreams and ambitions and not letting people stand in the way of you doing that and I think that like a lot of people growing up think that there's a certain mold that they should be in because of their gender but I feel like guys can do anything that girls can and girls can do anything that guys can, so it's just like kind of a girl power anthem.
Is there anyone that like girl power that has inspired you? Like who are some of your biggest influences growing up?
So many. Um I think like Emma Watson, she's a huge one. She's so intelligent, so smart and she just stands for girl power and just um my parents, my mom growing up, she definitely taught us that we should just go after what we want to do in life and not let people stand in the way of that, so.
And it's crazy to me that you like is it so crazy that you you've blown up so much but you're just working on your debut album.
Yeah. That's insane. The traction that the EP picked up within the last year is just crazy. But I'm super excited for the debut album. I'm getting some of the masters back and it just sounds so so awesome and I'm so excited for the world to hear it.
Is there any like sneak peeks you can tell us about like what the sound's gonna be like? Any new collaborations we should look forward to?
Um yeah, it's kind of gonna be a continuation of the EP sonically but just a little bit more like chill electronic and then some reggae sounds. It's just kind of like a mix of everything, so I'm excited for everyone to hear it.
And then has there been just like any moment this year because I know you you performed at the White House, right? Like that's insane.
Yeah, that was pretty incredible.
Meeting What was that like?
Obama and Michelle Obama, that was just insane. I've been on the road for like the past year or so just doing shows every day and in different cities and everything so it's been such a blast and the White House was a huge one. Coachella, I had so much fun there with The Chainsmokers and yeah, it's just been a blast.
And then okay, let's talk about your fashion because you look amazing right now. I I actually heard that you're you're loving bomber jackets, right?
I am. I love like varsity jackets, bomber jackets. I know everyone's like, "It's 100 degrees outside and I'm like sitting here wearing like a jacket." But yeah, I love that kind of stuff. I love like platforms, high tops. What are those? Or yeah, wedges.
And then like music wise, is there anything that you're loving right now? Like what have you been jamming to?
I love The 1975's new album. I love Chance the Rapper's album. Good songs, good music. I'm always on the lookout for new stuff to listen to and I'm always switching it up so yeah.
Are there artists that you actually like discover that you're like, "Oh my God, you need to have this person on your radar" that you would be want to like collaborate with, maybe even us.
Yeah, I would love to collaborate with Chance at some point. I think he's just so artistic and so cool and his his lyrics are awesome. He's so poetic.
That's awesome. Um okay so, we actually are on a live with you right now, so I wanted to bring it in really quick so you can just give a couple shout outs to fans that were super excited to see you.
Hey. Hi, everyone. So,
Does anyone have a couple quick any question that Daya can answer? Uh what's your favorite food? That's a great one.
My favorite food is definitely sushi.
Really?
100%, yeah.
Favorite color?
Uh black.
What inspired you, uh to be a singer?
Uh, just I just always knew. Yeah, I just played instruments when I was younger and went to concerts and just loved music so I just knew I would do that when I was older.
Okay, one more question. What's your favorite song?
My favorite song right now, um, "Somebody Else" by The 1975.
