Matthew McConaughey's Discovery: Mishka

you play around 9 9:30, man. there's an album that came on that really hit me right. And he goes, come here. We went over there and he goes, this one? He played it. It was the album that I had come to sleep to. I said, yeah, he goes, that's Mishka. That's the guy I was telling you about on the way over there. I was going to turn you on to. I was like, oh. Right on.

Hey everyone, it's Michelle Marie with Young Hollywood. I am here with Mishka. We're hanging poolside. Well, you grew up in Bermuda, grew up on a 40-foot sailing vessel and the lifestyle was just completely different from what you're living now. What would you do for a day? What was your routine?

Well, that's just it. There wasn't much routine. It was just, you know, whatever the breeze brought out with, you know. So when I was younger, I used to spend a lot of time windsurfing. I used to be home schooled on the boat and then as soon as I could be done with that, I tried to get on the water and just go sailing all the time, you know. Then as I get older, like 17, 18, I start write some songs on the guitar.

Tell us about your album above the bones and what we can draw from it.

It's a feel-good kind of album, you know. The message is love and respect to humanity, you know. Take me home. Oh, let us rise above the bones. Pretty mellow, you know, but it's something got some drive to it.

It is a reggae sound, but it's also acoustic. How do you like to describe it yourself?

You could classify it as just folk music and then some other stuff is purely roots reggae music. And another stuff, you know, it's just rock. They have a hard time putting it in a box, really.

This cat's on it. This is beautiful music. I know good music and this is great music. Tell us about how you got discovered by Matthew McConaughey in the very beginning.

They were in Jamaica partying for the New Year's 2000. Matthew was like real hungover or whatever. He couldn't get to sleep. One of his friends who was on vacation with him there had my album and put it on. And Matthew said it lulled him to sleep because it was the first album was real mellow acoustic album, you know. And so from then he was like, he was like, what was that music, you know, I really loved it. So that guy said, oh, that's Mishka. But then a couple years later, I was doing a show out here. Some of Matthew's people heard that I was there. So he sent someone down and said, try and get this guy's number, you know, I want to get in touch with him. He called me up. We just became friends.

With him actually wanting to go out and create this label JK Living, you're his first artist. How does that make you feel?

Special. So it's nice, you know. Matthew is somebody who loves music. He's really genuine. He listens to all kinds of stuff. He's introduced me to a lot of good stuff.

Where would you like to see yourself as an artist, you know, in the next few years?

In the studio. Touring and playing live is great. But I have a lot of material. I've written a lot of songs and I want to keep recording.

Well, a lot of artists are coming together and working together. Is there anyone that you have on the horizon that you want to work with?

Last year, I was on tour with Xavier Rudd from Australia and creatively, I think we could do something cool. Kanan, I'm a big fan of his music, you know. Would love to do a collaboration and something. Angles, just one love and respect. Peace, love and music every time, you know.
