What's up guys? Leslie Robbins here for Young Hollywood outside the Palladium in Hollywood. I am crashing the rehearsal of the Streamy Awards and going one-on-one with the show hosts Tyler Oakley and Grace Helbig.
My gosh, I was so emotional. I'm so glad I wore waterproof mascara, my gosh.
I'm trying really hard to act like an adult.
Gracious, I was making out with my wife when the camera was on me and I whispered, I said don't stop making out girlfriend.
Cool. Awesome. Dope. Wow, this is amazing. Uh Viner of the year. Who voted? My dad?
Tyler and Grace, I have crashed your rehearsal of the Streamy Awards. It's happening. It's happening. Yes! Yay! I mean, I know you're excited. They're excited down there. Yeah. What's the buzz like at the Palladium right now?
It's very exciting. There's a lot of really big plans. Uh so everyone I think is in a fervor to make sure that they go through accordingly. It's my first time hosting and so to see all of this stuff happen, like Grace did it last year. She did.
My name is Grace Helbig. We're here at the Street. Oh my God, I hate this so much.
The whole time I'm like, Grace, is this normal? And she's like
And I'm just sleeping with my eyes open. Half alive.
Um but it's exciting. Everyone's like working really hard to make it happen.
Yeah. Well, what is she teaching you?
Uh to expect the unexpected. Yeah. That if something goes off plan, it's okay. Yeah, I think it's one of the awards shows the few award shows where unexpected things are celebrated because it's an award show about the internet where unexpected things get celebrated constantly. So it only works in our favor if something gets messed up. I'm ready for it.
Yeah. Okay, let's talk about the word expectations. What can we expect between the two of you? Because this isn't your first rodeo, you've hosted before. But together, how's the chemistry? What can we expect? Jokes? What antics you got?
We hate each other. I hate her. She's garbage. Period.
We're having a really fun time. Tyler and I worked together in other capacities but not like this before. And so we've been having just a really good time keeping each other laughing and kind of grounded and comfortable and not too stressed out about everything.
We've actually, I we were just talking about it, but we uh made our first YouTube video together way back in the day before either of us were doing it as a career. Um and it was like Like 2010 or something. Like We had like no subscribers and she emailed me and she's like, "Hey, send me these clips of you saying these things." And like we look like babies in them. So I feel like we get each other and we like have a chemistry that I think hopefully will translate. And we'll just have fun. Yeah. All we want to do is make it a fun night for everyone that's coming. Because a lot of the people that are coming are our community and our friends. So it's like we're hosting a party that we want them to enjoy.
Trolls, you've been very mean to us recently. Naughty, naughty troll. We don't have time to psychoanalyze all of your history and why you have all of these seeds of hate inside you. Instead, we want to extend an open invitation to us at the Streamy Awards. Honestly, we need you to use the hashtag.
Let's talk about those early years on YouTube. Could you ever have imagined from where you started to where it is now, both of you and like social media?
I could have imagined for Grace. I could never imagine like I had no like it was never my intention. Um but you were doing stuff like this. You've you've been like doing comedy and improv and hosting.
Yeah, I mean the YouTube thing was a hobby for me while I still held onto the idea that TV and film were going to be my career trajectory. So the idea that it's become my main career is something I could never think of. And the fact that the community has grown the way it is, that we're here hosting an award show to give awards to fellow content creators is something I could never imagine. So I've learned to stop trying to predict what's going to happen in the future and just kind of roll with what's happening currently.
It's one of those things where you never even imagine or dream that you will get the opportunities that you get. And I feel like every day/week/month we see not just us, but our friends get incredible opportunities whether it's clothing brands or book deals or movie deals or TV shows where it to us it seems so like expected because they deserve it for all that hard work and all that talent. But to see it actually happen in front of us, it's like a blessing.
Well, you deserve it. You both deserve it.
Thank you.
And so YouTube kind of has built your career cause now you're doing TV. It's amazing how that worked.
It's very strange. It's a complete uh completely alternative route than I had thought for myself. So I've been
But it works.
But it works. Turns out it works.
And it worked for you because you through YouTube got to meet the president and advise him. What? Like what?
I did, which is crazy. Barack says hey.
Hey, Barack.
He might be. He's coming tomorrow.
Wait, I'm coming tomorrow. I'm not coming tomorrow.
Anybody could come.
Okay. So what did you tell Mr. Obama? President, what did you tell him?
I said girl. Just kidding. No. We He was like, I hear you. I see you and I get you.
Did he man hug? What'd you do? Fist bump?
I think we did a subtle manly handshake. Yeah.
Okay. Yeah. Well, what's that like?
He had a grasp. Oh.
Oh. It wasn't so subtle then.
Oh. No, no. It was a very, yeah. It was there. It was there.
Yeah? Really?
No.
Nice. Did you steal anything while you were in the White House?
No. And if I did, I would not tell you. But I did take a selfie in, I did take a selfie in his bathroom.
So what are you up to? Did you steal some social media props?
Yeah, that's what I did.
What's like the strangest thing you've seen? I mean, obviously you've seen a bazillion videos. Is there something that sticks out in your mind you're like, I cannot believe that's actually out there?
Everything exists on YouTube. Yeah. Um there's people popping pimples very close up. I love it. I love it. I'm the reason it's a thing. Not because I participate, because I watch. Um
Do you pop your own pimples though? On YouTube?
No. No, just in private. No, I get Grace to.
Our chemistry runs deep. You heard it here first.
So did you. I said I. Uh it's hard. Yeah, it's the internet now has become one of those things where you almost become jaded by the fact that you have seen it all online that when you see my first instinct about anything that seems crazy, that must be a marketing campaign. What are they selling me? And how many of them am I buying?
That's yeah. Same. We did a thing, uh maybe two years ago or something, where we were watching YouTube videos for the first time and reacting to them. But I feel like those were like shocking videos. After that, nothing faces me.
Okay, pick an A-list celebrity who doesn't really dabble in social media or YouTube. Who do you want to see making some YouTube videos?
Well, I just said this before. Um Liam Neeson, I think would be really great. But I also think Charlize Theron would be really great. I'm now really thinking about this. Charlize.
You know what I'm like. Where's Jonathan Taylor Thomas? And where are his daily vlogs?
Wait, where is he?
I don't know. I don't know. He deserves a YouTube channel.
You think?
Yeah, I know. Wow. Not only do I think, but I also know.
Yeah. I mean, what do you guys do when you're not making YouTube videos? There's got to be another side to you guys.
I, what do I do when I'm not making YouTube videos? I watch reality television. I watch YouTube videos when I'm not making YouTube videos as boring as that sounds. Um sleep. Sometimes happens.
Yeah. try. Try. Um I've recently gotten really into roller rinks. Um
Going to them or watching the roller skating.
Just thinking about them.
Just thinking about them. Stop. Just stop.
Google image searching roller rinks. No, they're really fun ones in L. A. Seriously?
Yeah. It's fun. Come with me. You later. I think we need to go to therapy.
No, no, no. I mean, I'll go to therapy. Therapy's good. A lot of things can come from therapy.
I'm watching a friendship happen. Oh. Bye, Grace. Bye. So tell me about some of the nominees that you've seen.
Well, I mean, for us it's like all of our friends. Um and like the YouTube community, you see all of these amazing creators finally get recognized. I don't really care who wins when it comes to a lot of the awards. I'm just like, I'm excited to see everyone show up, get all glitz and glammed.
Yeah, I think it's one of the most fun award shows to watch because it's a room of people that know each other on a more personal level and are celebrating everything about everyone's careers. So you watch a lot of people rooting on and cheering for everyone in that room.
And the room, you know, has grown and evolved over the years and it's a lot of, you know, traditional celebrities are there with us this year which is exciting. To watch, you know, the inter interminglings of uh of our friends and the Paula Abduls of the world.
Right. I really want Miranda Sings to win something and accept it as Miranda Sings. That would be the moment I want.
Yeah. Yes, yes. I think for a lot of us too, you know, we're pretty paired down making videos in our own homes. that seeing everyone getting dressed up and being in the same room with each other, being adults, celebrating each other is going to be really fun.
We get to act like adults.
Yeah. And I think like you said you didn't care who won, but when you guys were nominated and you won, I think you cared. Who won? Because then you won.
Yeah. Listen, I support anybody, but especially me. What? What's going on? What what have I done? So that's that's my standpoint. You all said it. How you going to love anyone else if you don't love yourself?
That's beautiful. That's beautiful. Well then we'll all tune in to watch you guys kick some butt on the stage.
Yes. 10 p. m. VH1. Everyone watch. Also on YouTube, youtube. com/vh1.
Of course on YouTube. Yeah. Makes sense. Love.
