No, we're here to That's actually not a surprise for most people who know me. Which is the strange part.
Welcome to Young Hollywood. Hey guys, Jessica Smith here in Malibu, California where the stars showed up with the Surfrider and Acosta. Most people know you from like a small little show. Like I mean, have you heard have you seen it? I don't know. I feel like it's like so miniscule that I probably slipped my mind. What is it again?
Well, it's called True Blood. It's on HBO. Um and uh we're hoping people catch on to it, you know? It's uh you know, it's a little vampire show. Seems like it's gotten a concept going. It's a good concept. We're just hoping it finally hits and stuff.
Tell me a little bit about why you decided to get involved with the Surfrider Foundation.
Well, okay. Surfrider I mean, it's a no-brainer. I I actually surf here all the time. This is Malibu Beach and uh it's a classic spot. And Surfrider uh is a non-profit organization that um that keeps the beaches clean and more importantly keeps the ocean clean. But organizations like Surfrider um are educating people about it and helping keep things clean and um it's great, you know, it's keeping the environment strong.
Yeah. Now, how long have you been surfing in general?
Probably, God. Good question. I've forgotten. It's been long enough for me to forget.
That's great.
Uh I think like eight years maybe or seven years?
So, are you pretty good?
No. No, it takes like a decade. It takes a decade to become an intermediate surfer. Really? And then like another decade to become a good one. And if you start as late as I have, you'll never be, you'll never be great. Never.
No, don't tell me that. No. How long did it take you like how many tries because I know like this getting up on the board is like the hardest part. Yeah. Did you get up on the first try?
I don't think so. No. I don't think so. I had so many sessions when I was starting out that I would maybe stand up once and I'd be out for two hours in freezing cold and I mean it's so fun. It's great to be out there.
I'm sitting here with Eric Balfour and he doesn't have on underwear. No, we're here to
That's actually not a surprise to most people who know me. Which is the strange part.
I'm a little bit surprised. Um no, so tell me a little bit about why you decided to get involved with the Surfrider.
Um I I've been working with the Surfrider Foundation for for many years now and um this event is the Surfrider Celebrity Expression Session where they get a bunch of actors and musicians, uh most of which don't surf that well. Um but they all do enjoy and love the ocean and and they love surfing and so we get to come out and we get in the water and we take some, we catch some waves and and hopefully um get some attention all by people like you and we appreciate that, you know, different news and media outlets come out and and talk about this and put it on the air and and it it just raises the consciousness of of people that, you know, we need to do something that we need to pay attention to to our actions. My wife is a really avid surfer and so she keeps me she'll actually keep me surfing more often than I would. Like it could be raining if there are waves we're going surfing.
That's amazing.
Yeah, so but it's always funny cuz like you know, you never know what actor or celebrity's going to be out there. You're out the other day and Kevin Bacon paddled into a wave and my wife was like I'm like, all right, stop. All right, I don't need this.
You're like, really?
Yeah, like while we're surfing. I don't need you like Googling Kevin Bacon, you know.
Do you stretch?
I will a little bit. I have to. I'm at that age where if I don't it'll be a very short session for me. I'll be the guy going with the bad back.
Tell me a little bit about like what you're doing here at the Surfrider Foundation.
Well, um I'm just here to surf in this contest because uh we get first point, one of the most famous um crowded waves on the coast of California for a half hour um and each wave we catch, we raise money. So, I'm going to catch as many waves as I possibly can um for Surfrider. And it's a great event.
Now, any other contest like if you were to a surfing competition like a serious surfing contest. Would you place?
No. Absolutely not.
Do you I mean. Be honest.
Yeah, I mean it's a different level. They're there they look, there's Pro and then there's like A. I'm probably around the B.
