WOMEN WE LOVE: Ali Wong

Ali Wong is making herself known and we are here for it. With a hit stand-up special, a leading animated series, and an all-new Netflix romcom, Ali is dominating screens and breaking barriers for representation around the world.

Born in San Francisco as the youngest of 4 siblings, it makes sense that Ali would grow up wanting all the attention she could get. She discovered her love of performing during her time at UCLA, where she completed a B.A. in Asian-American Studies and was an avid performer in the university’s LCC theatre company – the largest and longest running Asian-American theatre company. Following graduation in 2004, Ali decided to follow her dream to the Big Apple, and when she tried stand-up for the first time at just 23 years old, it was true love.  

She was committed to her craft to say the least, sometimes performing up to 9 times a night, anywhere she could. But it didn’t all come easy -- it wasn’t until 2011 that Ali really started making a name for herself. It was that year that Variety named her one of the “10 Comics to Watch”, which lead the way for her to perform for larger audiences with appearances on "The Tonight Show", John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show, and the Underground Comedy Show. Soon enough, she was cast as a series regular on the NBC comedy "Are You There, Chelsea?" and even booked a few roles in feature films like Oliver Stone’s Savages.

Ali has an amazing mind for comedy, serving as a writer for "Fresh Off the Boat" since 2014 and made huge headlines with her first Netflix stand-up special "Baby Cobra", which was released in 2016. "Baby Cobra" was filmed while Ali was 7 months pregnant with her first child, and was such a hit that it shot her into superstardom. What a boss.

She followed up "Baby Cobra" with another hit special in 2018, "Hard Knock Wife", which was once again filmed while she was 7. Months. Pregnant!!!!!  There must be something in those babies...

These days, Ali is lending her voice to the Netflix animated series "Tuca & Bertie", voicing the anxious songbird Bertie, opposite another woman we love, Tiffany Haddish. But that’s not all!! She also wrote and is starring in our new favorite rom-com Always Be My Maybe, where she gets to kiss Daniel Dae Kim, Randall Park, AND Keanu Reeves!!! Talk about a real queen.

Always Be My Maybe is now streaming on Netflix and we will be watching it no less than three (3) times this weekend. Keep up the good work, Ali, we love you!!!
