What To Look Forward To In "Grown-ish" Season 3!

Written by Rishi Patel. Published: August 19 2019

[Warning: Spoilers!]

“Grown-ish” fans will have to wait until we usher in the new decade to find out what happens with Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and her friends at Cal-U. After the jaw-dropping Season 2 finale that premiered on August 7, there are more questions than answers when it comes to the lives of Zoey’s tight knit group.

To give a quick recap of the Season 2 Finale, Nomi (Emily Arlook) learns her romantic relationship with Professor Hewson (Katherine Moennig) has been discovered, Sky’s (Halle Bailey) injury will prevent her from competing in a track competition with her twin sister Jazz (Chloe Bailey), Zoey and Luca (Luka Sabbat) argue about her job offer from Joey Bada$$ and break up, and to put the icing on the cake, Zoey and Aaron (Trevor Jackson) share a goodbye kiss at the airport as she heads to London for the job. As if that isn’t a lot to digest already, Luca attempts to be the hero and catch Zoey before she departs. What a dramatic finish to the group’s sophomore year of college!

The only response to this is, can Season 3 return next month?!

The finale was enticing and had more twists and turns than fans and myself could have expected. Season 3 will be just as exciting, as the group tries to navigate their way out of problems. For one, there could be love triangle(s) formed. Ana (Francia Raisa) may possibly develop feelings for Aaron again, thus creating a love triangle between Aaron, Ana, and Zoey. There may be another one as Zoey continues to sort out her feelings for Aaron and Luca. Aaron and Zoey do have a connection, and with Luca being so impossible to figure out, she could turn to Aaron instead. Luca downsized Zoey before they officially ended things, and who could blame her? Check out their argument that led to the breakup:

Naturally, it seems fitting that Zoey would run to Aaron after the breakup, as he seems to understand her. And the kiss signifies that these two could become more! But, where does this leave the relationship between Zoey and Ana, who is supposed to be Zoey’s close friend? It certainly won’t be pleasant for Ana to see Aaron with Zoey all the time, especially after Ana and Aaron’s romance during Season 2. I can sense the drama is about to escalate, and friendships may become irreparable, relationships may be formed and tested, and it’s turned into a large messy web of romantic feelings between the main characters. Ohhhhh man, I cannot contain my excitement for how this will all play out!

There were hints dropped at the end of Season 2 about increasing tension, and the episode prior to the finale sent that memo, as Zoey accepted a job from Joey Bada$$ that Luca would have wanted. In addition, Aaron and Zoey hugged after he heard the news about the job offer. Check out Aaron and Zoey’s moment here:

After breaking up with Luca and kissing Aaron, leaving the U.S. for the Summer presents Zoey with an oasis from her ongoing relationship problems, but it’s only setting the stage for an awkward start to the school year.

Though the romantic entanglement is a massive cliffhanger, don’t forget about Nomi’s relationship with her professor being brought into the spotlight. Now she will be faced with exposing their relationship and jeopardizing Professor Hewson’s career, or lying to save her. The decisions that await are making me more thrilled for Season 3!

It’s been an enjoyable ride watching the main characters of “Grown-ish” develop through the trials and errors of college life thus far. The Season 2 finale achieved what all great finales should do, and that’s leave the audience pondering hypothetical situations. I mean, there’s so many!

Will Zoey and Luca set aside their differences and make up?

Will Ana find out about Aaron and Zoey’s kiss and how will she react?

Can Zoey and Aaron make it work in a relationship?

Would Luca ever forgive Zoey and Aaron?

What will Nomi make of her Professor’s fate?

Can Sky recover?

So much to look forward to!

Season 3 is set to return in Winter 2020 and Freeform has already dropped a “Save the Date” promo:

Because the Season 3 premiere remains far off, all we can do as fans is keep wondering about the fates of Zoey and her crew!
