TV FROM AROUND THE WORLD: "Elite" (Spain)

Written by Devon Forward. Published: September 10 2019

Since Netflix just released the second season, we think it’s time to bring your attention to the thrilling Spanish-language teen drama “Elite”. If you’re looking for a sexier and darker version of “Gossip Girl”, this is it.

The story is about a posh private school called Las Encinas, where the rich and powerful rule. When 3 scholarship students, Samuel (Itzan Escamilla), Nadia (Mina El Hammani), and Christian (Miguel Herrán), start attending, the privileged students see them as unwelcome and start playing mental games for both their entertainment and to get them to leave.

The first episode introduces two timelines that the show goes back and forth between the whole season. While the first shows the new students' immersion into this intense school, the other starts a while in the future, when one student, Marina (María Pedraza), is found murdered by the school’s pool. This second storyline shows the investigation that follows, as we learn more about all the suspects, until the last episode reveals the truth of that doomed day.

While “Elite” has a murder mystery at the center of its plot, the show really shines through the characters’ complicated relationships with each other. Despite how much they try not to, some of the rich kids start to like the newbies, and some very passionate and interesting romance ensues.

At the end of Season 1, we know who the murderer is, but not everyone in the show does. In Season 2, some are determined to find who did it and make them pay, while others are making harsh choices to get what they want. Season 2 adds in a new mystery, ramping up the romance and drama. If you don’t care about spoilers, or have already binged all of Season 1, watch the trailer for Season 2 below!
