5. Safe choices dominate the mainstream.
The ideas expressed in this year’s press conferences were mostly safe and uncontroversial, and predictable choices prevailed over originality. The bulk of attention was directed toward the creation of sequels as well as revivals, such as the resurrections of older series such as Baldur's Gate III, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Shenmue III, and Commander Keen. In addition, games like DOOM: Eternal, Chivalry 2, Watch Dogs Legion, Wolfenstein: Young Blood, and Dying Light 2 were all announced; however, they focus on themes and ideas that we’ve already seen before.
Even a new Avengers game was announced, which is hardly an original, compelling idea. It feels like the industry is focusing on trademark maintenance rather than taking advantage of game-makers’ creativity.
