The 6 Best Musical Episodes From Our Favorite TV Shows!

Written by María Calvo. Published: March 10 2020

Who doesn’t love a good musical?

It’s great to see regular characters from our beloved TV shows just randomly jump into choreography and start singing. Whenever there’s a special episode featuring original songs, you can bet fans all around the world are going to drop everything they’re doing to watch it (and after that, hear the soundtrack on loop).

It wasn’t easy, but we made a list of our favourite musical episodes ever! Check it out below!

1. "Once Upon a Time": Season 6, Episode 20

When "Once Upon a Time" decided to do a musical episode, I will be the first one to admit it: I was sceptical. I couldn’t have guessed how the songs would fit so well within the narrative!

When Snow White makes a wish to protect Emma from the Evil Queen, magic takes matters into its own hands and makes everyone sing according to their own desires and stories. The lyrics perfectly matched each character, and it was so fun to see so many mixed genres!

Although Josh Dallas (aka Prince Charming) undeniably had the best voice, Lana Parrilla stole the spotlight with her “Love Doesn’t Stand a Chance” performance. To be honest, we still get goosebumps when we listen to it!

2. "The Flash": Season 3, Episode 7

I was so ready when "The Flash" announced that there would be a musical episode.

The reason? Grant Gustin had been in "Glee" a few years before, and we already knew that neither dancing nor singing would be a problem for him.

But little did I know Melissa Benoist would join him! The titular "Supergirl" had also been part of the "Glee" cast, which was a really cool coincidence. Both of them have amazing voices, and the mafia vibes and beautiful lyrics from the episode just highlighted them somehow.

After their characters Kara and Barry are put into a musical dreamworld by villain Music Meister, they work together to try to come back. During their adventure, they realize their true feelings for Mon-el and Iris respectively… and I think that’s all I need to say!

3. "Supernatural": Season 10, Episode 5

By now, we are used to all kinds of special episodes from "Supernatural". But for their 200th episode, they decided to go big and do a musical episode… where none of the Winchester brothers sang.

While this might sound disappointing at first, the episode was better than we expected! Sam and Dean go to an all-girls high school to kill a monster, only to realize that they are doing a musical about their lives. It was very fun to see the girls’ portrayals of our beloved characters and to relive their story again.

Also, the final song was “Carry On My Wayward Son” – which is the theme that is featured before every season finale of the show. It was very emotional and a great way to celebrate how far the series had come.

4. "Riverdale": (Season 2, Episode 18)

The Carrie musical episode was something I didn’t know I needed until I saw it.

While keeping the essence of the Broadway musical, the gang sang and danced to songs that totally matched them – except for Jughead, but we can’t say we’re surprised.

Riverdale High prepares a musical based on Stephen King’s Carrie, but when a potential murderer is on the loose, they all need to overcome their differences to stay alive. Like a classic whodunit, Jughead is busy figuring out who wants to sabotage the event from the inside.

Honestly, it was very fun to have a little pause from all the drama that is always going on in the show. And, in my opinion, the singing and dancing was far better than their Heathers musical episode!

5. "Grey’s Anatomy": Season 7, Episode 18

One of the most moving episodes on this list is "Song Beneath The Song" from "Grey’s Anatomy".

After Callie suffers a car accident, she has an out-of-body experience as she is being attended by her co-workers. Luckily, there’s a happy ending (at least in that episode) and we get to see more of her in further seasons!

All the songs are pretty amazing, but Sara Ramirez’s “Chasing Cars” was spectacular and one of the fans’ favourites. Also, the music made the scenes more intense and emotional – and that’s probably the reason why I loved the special episode so much!

6. "Buffy The Vampire Slayer": Season 6, Episode 7

And obviously, I couldn’t forget Buffy!

When a demon makes everyone sing and dance until death, it’s up to Buffy and her friends to stop him. However, the songs reveal everyone’s deepest truths and secrets – and Buffy admits something unexpected in “Give Me Something To Sing About”.

To be honest, it was probably one of the most powerful moments in the all the series. Even though all the songs were fantastic, there’s something about that one that makes it unforgettable and stand out from the rest.
