The 5 Best Seasons of "The Traitors", Ranked!

A global phenomenon, "The Traitors" has over 50 seasons across 6 continents, from the U.S. to Australia, hooking countless people on the salacious game of deceit and murder. The reality game show, styled after party games "Mafia" and "Werewolf", centers on a group of faithfuls who attempt to catch the traitors before they eliminate them all. This list will help you decide which seasons are the best to start with if you’re new to the manor and open the floor for debate amongst true "Traitor" fans!
5. Australia, Season 1
"The Traitors Australia" Season 1 is a must-watch for dedicated "Traitors" fans and newbies alike, because it gets all the basics right -- the hallmark tense atmosphere, ruthless crew of Traitors, and unpredictable plot twists keep the momentum high. While naive faithfuls in the following seasons of Australian Traitors can be frustrating to watch, this season nailed its casting, letting equal amounts of smart moves and chaotic change-ups maintain the anticipation. The uniquely heavy usage of shields in this season alters players’ strategy, grounding the paranoia-ridden contest with practical choices and giving audiences solid reasons to support certain players over others.
4. New Zealand, Season 1
Hopping across Oceania, Season 1 of the New Zealand edition of "Traitors" offers a classic feel for the social strategy reality TV show. While the U.S. and U.K. "Traitors" might have higher production value, the slightly lower-gloss New Zealand season refocuses viewers’ attention on the actual gameplay, building authentic connections and suspicions across everyday people. The focus on conversation, deduction, and each person’s unique personality allows for this season to feel much more focused. By emphasizing interpersonal tensions above the glitz of high-budget challenges and settings, Season 1 offers an excellent stripped-down version to understand the game’s strategic nuance.
3. U.K., Season 1
Often referred to as an ideal introduction to the franchise, U.K. Season 1 nails "The Traitors" ambience: gothic castle, high stakes, and regular people with emotional investment that makes betrayal sting all the worse. Despite the faithfuls’ gullibility, their deeply human bonds and secrets bring an air of genuineness that complicates the competition and really draws viewers in. Claudia Winkleman also shines as a host, bringing a mix of deadpan humor, warmth, and sometimes an eerie tone to foreground the kindness and cruelty paramount to "Traitors". Plus, the endgame is one for the books!
2. U.S., Season 2
Skyrocketing the American "Traitors" into the limelight, U.S. Season 2 uses a cast of all reality stars to really up the ante. Their experience means the game starts before the traitors are even selected. Preexisting relationships and rivalries from across reality TV ("Survivor", "Big Brother", etc.) add a juicy new meta-layer that gives avid reality lovers (and even haters) something to chew on. Alan Cumming also shines as the host, delivering campy monologues that really highlight the twists, turns, and drama of the series. The casting, narrative, and production of this season are so strong that the show actually won the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program.
1. U.K., Season 2
Out of all of them, however, our favorite season of "The Traitors" thus far has to be U.K. Season 2. From the jump, Season 2 shapes players into clear archetypes -- heroes and villains -- that are built deliberately throughout the season. Despite using an all-civilian cast, the show feels like it might as well have been scripted with how perfectly the scheming of traitors and the perception of faithfuls plays out. The editing engages viewers in a cat-and-mouse chase without ever losing an ounce of tension. Plus, this season really highlights the social-experiment aspect of this game, playing on popularity, prejudice, and emotional bias that feel more real than other manufactured reality shows. This season is a must-watch if you have not seen it already!
Despite this list distilling our top five favorite seasons, it’s hard to ignore the recent success and butt-clenching tension of the recent U.S. Season 4, starring celebrities from world-star figure skaters to "Love Island" contestants, in addition to the 45+ other seasons and counting. Good thing Peacock has multiple seasons of "The Traitors" available to stream now! So, it’s time to hop on "The Traitors" train or stay on board if you’ve already been watching, because there’s plenty more to uncover in this game of deception!
