STUDIO SPOTLIGHT: Keke Palmer
"Scream Queens" star Keke Palmer recently swung by the Young Hollywood Studio to discuss her new book I Don’t Belong to You: Quiet the Noise and Find Your Voice. The always-fashionable Palmer came dressed to the nines in a regal all-white outfit, paired with a vintage Chanel belt, which she credits to completing the outfit. Palmer confessed she finally developed her own personal rock star-influenced style, but that it took some time. Plus, she dished on her secrets to her cool girl Instagram aesthetic. The formula involves a mix of fashion shots and poetry posts, all with personal captions. Captions are important to Palmer because she uses Instagram as a way to connect with her fans; she wants them to get to know her and get inside her head.
Even though it’s been a year since "Grease Live" premiered, Palmer still keeps in contact with her cast-mates — they currently have an active group chat going. She dished that David Del Rio and the director Tony Kale send the funniest messages in the group. When performing on Broadway, Palmer learned there was an inherent community built and that proved to be no different for this Broadway-meets-TV mash-up.
Currently, Palmer plays Zayday Williams on the hit show “Scream Queens”, who is, without a doubt, the most trusting character on the show, and she is clearly extremely determined to succeed. Palmer even joked that she may one day be President, and we have to say we agree! Part of the magic of "Scream Queens" might be due to their “get up and go” approach to making the show — the show doesn’t do table reads! It's topical, relevant, and the actors' unique personality traits are displayed in each character, which Palmer appreciates. As for on-set besties, Palmer confesses Billie Lourd and Taylor Lautner currently hold that title.
Palmer was inspired to write her recently released book based on her learning experiences and business knowledge that she has acquired from entering the entertainment industry at such a young age. Some inspiring revelations she shares in the book are her realization that money doesn’t buy happiness and her journey to living a life of purpose. Palmer put her heart and soul into the writing of this book, taking two years to perfect all of its contents, and even sneaking writing sessions in between scenes on the set of “Screams Queens”. The writing process was therapeutic, as Palmer wrote about past experiences and expressed herself on each page.
Before leaving, we had Palmer play our game “Take it or Leave it”, where she schooled us on top fashion trends. However, Palmer will tell you the secret to mastering any trend is accessorizing!
