Our 5 Favorite Looks From NewFest Pride!
The film community in New York City kicked off Pride Month last weekend with NewFest Pride, a film showcase put on by New York’s leading LGBTQ+ film and media organization. The festival featured film premieres, question and answer sessions with filmmakers, social events, and, of course, fashion. Here’s a quick roundup of the top 5 looks from the festivities!
1. Jessenia Gallegos
The first premiere of the weekend was for Fairyland, a coming-of-age flick based on a memoir of the same name by Alysia Abbott starring Adam Lambert set in the 1980s. Actress Jessenia Gallegos supported the premiere and brought the colors of the rainbow to the carpet with her thermal heat-inspired mini-dress from Kollyy (top of page). Gallegos completed the look with some lively half-up, half-down space buns!
2. Julio Torres
Next on the roster at NewFest Pride was Problemista, a film following the story of an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador as he chases his dreams in New York City. Star of the film Julio Torres rolled up to the premiere in a black and white stripey ensemble, adding a pop of color to the look with a firetruck red tank top. The actor’s hair is currently dyed pink, which contributed to the fun look that fell right in line with the creative likeness of his character in the film.
3. Alok Vaid-Menon
Gender non-conforming writer and performance artist Alok Vaid-Menon also made a fashion statement worth discussing at the Problemista premiere! Vaid-Menon rocked the carpet in a dazzling pink and teal dress designed by Mayyur Girotra, an Indian couture designer that recently debuted a gender-fluid collection. Flawlessly coordinating their dress to their makeup with bright pink eyeshadow, Vaid-Menon fortified their status as a gender non-conforming fashion icon.
4. Aitch Alberto
Aitch Alberto had quite the victory lap to run at NewFest Pride with the New York premiere of her highly-anticipated book adaptation, Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets Of the Universe. It was a victory lap run looking fashionable, Alberto walking the carpet and answering audience questions after the screening in a vintage Max Magpie dress. The look was tied together with tinted shades, the writer/director looking just like the star she’s bound to be.
5. MiMi Ryder
One of the last films to be screened at NewFest was Mutt, Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s directorial debut about a transgender man trying to repair his relationship with his family. Actress MiMi Ryder plays the main character’s younger sister and brought a youthful aura to the carpet as she walked with her castmates. Ryder went for a denim-on-denim look, wearing a shimmery Union Jack shirt under the dark wash denim jacket she paired with blue jeans. The simple yet sweet look was brought together with natural makeup and her hair done in playful waves!
