Netflix is making all of Neil Gaiman’s dreams come true. They have officially signed with Warner Bros. Television and added a Sandman TV series to their slate. And it’s about dang time!

This will be the first Sandman TV series after numerous efforts, and sources familiar with the Netflix-Warner Bros. deal describe it as the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done. This upcoming 11-episode order is based on Gaiman’s ongoing monthly comic of the same name, which first debuted in the late-‘80s. Allan Heinberg is set to write the straight-to-series drama, and Gaiman will executive produce alongside David Goyer.

"We're thrilled to partner with the brilliant team that is Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg to finally bring Neil's iconic comic book series, The Sandman, to life onscreen," said Channing Dungey, VP Originals at Netflix. "From its rich characters and storylines to its intricately built-out worlds, we're excited to create an epic original series that dives deep into this multi-layered universe beloved by fans around the world."

We’ve seen Sandman comic book characters going on the way back to 1939. Fifty years later, Gaiman’s version of the mythical character was co-created by artists Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg. Their creation was atypical to the comic world. Instead of a caped crusader, the comic tells a horrific, fantasy tale of the Endless, a powerful group of siblings who rule over the world of dreams. The main character of The Sandman is Dream, who is also known as Morpheus. Over the course of 75 issues, Gaiman told his sprawling, dark story.
