Joshua Bassett wants us to have the time of our lives with his new single, “Feel Something”! Just shy of two months after he gave us his debut EP, he released this new track and the accompanying video, which he directed, and described as “just my friends and a camera man running around L.A. having a good time.” Visually, it’s a mix between the neon light aesthetic of a 21st century teen movie and carefree vlogs pulled straight from his camera roll -- a combination that works well with the feeling of the song.

While the video showcases the exhilaration of a night of freedom in a big city with your friends, the lyrics can also indicate the whirlwind intensity of a passionate relationship. Joshua sings in the opening verse, “And most days, dear, you drive me insane, playin' your games / Why don't we both push past the pain so we can say / (We felt it)...” He continues in the chorus, “Got no plan, doin' anything we can just to feel somethin'...” It’s both a hallmark of the teenage experience and a response to the all-consuming power of social media, as Joshua explained: “We often live our lives in so much fear, not fully embracing and leaning into life, and that’s what this song is about. Social media is very numbing, so it’s trying to correct that and trying to just have fun.” It’s a necessary message that we can all relate to and learn from.

In the vein of feeling something, Joshua also posted a heartfelt message on his Instagram, detailing his struggle with suppressing emotions and dealing with toxic masculinity while growing up. He urged boys to “please take the time to evaluate your emotional health” and ended with the powerful statement “numb is no way to live.” He included a video of himself playing an unreleased song on the guitar, strumming while laying in the bathtub.

With the premiere of the next season of "High School Musical: The Musical -- The Series" only a few days away, all eyes are on Joshua, and we’re so glad that he’s using his platform not just to release new music but to draw attention to important issues like this as well.
