ICYMI: Zach Snyder Heading To The Small Screen With Norse Mythology Anime For Netflix!

We’re avid followers of Zack Snyder’s live-action features, like Justice League and Aquaman, so it came as a huge surprise when we heard that the prolific writer-director-producer was taking a new direction and turning his attention to TV. But what really piqued our interest was exactly what he’s been working on: a new Norse mythology anime series for Netflix!

If you're like us, you're probably thinking the same thing: What the heck is Norse anime?? Norse mythology deals with ancient folk tales of gods and heroes from Scandinavian countries (think Thor), while anime is, of course, a style of Japanese animation. How will these two drastically different aesthetics be combined? We have no idea but we can't wait to find out!

It’s quite the change from his typical caped crusaders, but we’re here for it! As of now, we don’t know much about the plot, but what we DO know is that the series hails from Stone Quarry Animation and was co-created by Snyder and his frequent collaborator Jay Olivia. The duo has worked on many projects together, including Justice League, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, 300: Rise of an Empire, and Man of Steel. Together, they are set to co-executive produce, and Olivia will also direct and act as the series showrunner. Snyder’s wife, Deborah Snyder, is also set to executive produce the new mythology anime series alongside Wesley Coller.

This series isn’t the only project on Snyder’s slate. He’s currently, writing, directing, and producing the feature film Army of the Dead. Meanwhile, Olivia is also currently working with Netflix on the production of the streamer's original anime series "Trese". In fact, Netflix’s anime slate has grown significantly over the last couple of years, and along with "Trese", this upcoming Norse mythology series will join titles such as "Ultraman", "Aggretsuko", "Castlevania", "Devilman Crybaby", Godzilla: The Planet Eater, "Magic: The Gathering", Pacific Rim, "Altered Carbon", Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, a live-action "Cowboy Bebop", and Transformers: War for Cybertron. New anime series "Cannon Busters", "Seis Manos", and "Levius" are expected to debut this year as well.
