ICYMI: Netflix Turning 'Cuphead' Video Game Into Animated Comedy Series!

Written by Julia Hutchens. Published: July 14 2019

It’s no secret that Netflix has been scrambling for new content. Nowadays there are new projects being announced by the streaming giant daily. This isn’t 2011 anymore, though, and the competition margin of the online streaming service sector has grown significantly. In the next few months, we will see many new streaming services pop up. And as companies like NBCUniversal and WarnerMedia gear up to release their own streaming apps, they’ve announced that they’re taking back some of their most popular Netflix-streamed TV shows, such as "The Office" and "Friends".

The entertainment industry has had a recent obsession with live-action reboots. Basically any movie or TV show that was popular 10+ years ago is getting a live-action reboot. Reboots of popular movies typically rake in huge audiences, so they are a streaming service’s best shot at staying relevant. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED Aladdin, and I’m SUPER excited to see The Lion King. But when I heard about Netflix’s latest project, which is not a live-action reboot, it was like a breath of fresh air.

Indie game company Studio MDHR is working in collaboration with King Features to bring an original animated comedy series based on the massively popular 2017 indie platforming game Cuphead to the streaming service. FINALLY. Something I’ve never seen before. On the small screen nor the big screen! Netflix announced on Tuesday that the upcoming adaptation series of the massively popular game will be called "The Cuphead Show!".

The new animated comedy will expand upon the characters and world of the game, which centers on titular hero Cuphead and his brother Mugman, who make a deal with the Devil in a high-stakes gambling match. The game has been a huge success and sold over 4 million copies worldwide since its debut in 2017. At the 2017 Game Awards, Cuphead won the Best Independent Game award, in addition to a BAFTA Games award for its music.

Dave Wasson ("Mickey Mouse Shorts") and Cosmo Segurson ("Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling") will serve as co-executive producers alongside the game’s creators and brothers, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer.
