ICYMI: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Director Set to Helm Snow White Remake
If you're the kind of person that wished every single one of the animated Disney classics everyone enjoyed as a child would get the live-action treatment, then for you, my friend, it is a great time to be alive. After the successes of Cinderella, Maleficent, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, and The Jungle Book, it was clear that the mouse was dead-set on unleashing all these cartoon wonders from the vault to the big screen once again, taking full advantage of today's CGI technology. Recently continuing this trend was Aladdin, and following that will soon be The Lion King, both having some serious star power behind them as well as next-level visual effects work. But now it is time to bring the one that started it all back to theaters. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, the 1937 classic that kicked off what some would consider a century-long legacy, Snow White will be getting remade for the modern era, and this epic cinematic endeavor now has a filmmaker set to take the helm.
Marc Webb, the director of The Amazing Spider-Man films and 500 Days of Summer, is being sought by Disney to helm their latest animation-to-live-action motion picture. And I think this is a fine choice. Webb is a diverse filmmaker that has an undeniable knack for telling unique stories. He is just coming off the Netflix series “The Society”, which is basically a modern-day version of Lord of the Flies, that has been well-received by subscribers of the streaming giant. So tackling a story involving seven small miners, witches, and some questionable sleeping methods is right up his alley. That being said, Disney almost definitely has a game plan for Webb to follow with the Disney adaptation of Snow White, with the desired outcome more likely to veer closely to the original story and delightful music of the famed animated masterpiece. I mean, these nostalgic remakes basically sell themselves, so this should, in effect, be a walk in the park for Webb.
Snow White has proven to be a popular story to adapt in recent years, with films like Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman offering audiences different and darker takes on the classic tale. While these adaptations were successful in their own right, Disney will not fix what isn't broken and stay close to the original like the others. This established genre has undoubtedly struck a chord with audiences and more times over has proven to be easy money for the major studio. To make sure this all goes down, the script for this one will potentially be penned by The Girl on the Train screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson, who is also currently in negotiations with the studio. And for those that are just buying tickets to these things for the music, the songwriting duo behind La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and the recently-released Aladdin,Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, will write new songs for the movie. So far, this all sounds great, and this film is really coming together. Now, all we need is a leading lady and a release date...
