In 2013, Syfy introduced the world to one of the most absurd films ever made: Sharknado. When the film first came out, it took me a few minutes to figure out that the title could not have been more clear about the plot: a bunch of sharks end up airbound in a cyclone and attack people. I had trouble believing that this was all that the film could be, but upon watching it this past year at a friend’s Halloween party, I was amazed to see that, yes, this is a two hour film about a bunch of sharks flying through the air, preying on hapless victims.
Syfy has now decided that one Sharknado wasn’t enough (either that or maybe they felt the subtle nuances of the first film were too complicated and it needs to be explained again) as the network has made a sequel. The first teaser trailer for Sharknado 2 has been released, and words cannot describe its insanity:
It looks as though there are a few minor changes in Sharknado 2: the sharks are sent to New York this time (as opposed to Los Angeles in the first film), and there appear to be a few new actors. The fact that Entertainment Weekly calls the film “even more ridiculous” than the first one completely boggles my mind. How on Earth can it be even more ridiculous? Are there also flying gorillas in this one that just aren’t shown in the trailer?
I am a little disappointed that the film does not have a better subtitle. Syfy actually let Twitter users come up with it, and apparently the winner was “The Second One”. Like the main title itself, it gets right to the point, no?
I can’t help but wonder if Syfy is going to continue on its shark trend -- in the next film, perhaps the sharks time travel through tornadoes and eat Hitler or something.
Are you excited to see Sharknado 2: The Second One?
