First Teaser For Live-Action 'Mulan' Blends Disney's Original With Chinese Tradition!
What is that movie I see? It’s Mulan! Yes, it's Disney’s 1998 original film… but not really. It’s even better. Disney is making a live-action film of Mulan and I cannot contain my excitement. The film is directed by Niki Caro, only the second woman to direct a Disney film budgeted over $100 million. Talk about some woman power. Check out the first trailer below and read on to see everything we know so far about the film.
The movie looks pretty sick, right?! There are a few things missing, though, that have fans all riled up. Did you notice? The lizard. Just kidding. “Dragon. DRAGON. Not Lizard. He doesn’t do that tongue thing.” You guessed right, the powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu is missing! Cri-Kee is also not seen in the trailer! Yes, Mulan and Mushu go together like Ariel and Flounder, but I guess we will have to wait and see if Eddie Murphy’s and Frank Welker’s 1998 characters play a role in this live-action film.
The film is said to be a mix of Disney’s animated version of Mulan and the traditional Chinese Ballad of Mulan. With that being said, maybe there isn’t room to cast a talking dragon and a cute little cricket. It also looks like Mulan will not be fighting against Shan Yu or falling in love with her captain, Li Shang. In this live remake, she will be battling a witch and falling in love with a fellow soldier. So, despite some differences, Mulan is still going to be badass with some super woman strength.
So, who is playing the amazing Mulan, you may ask? That woman would be Liu Yifei. In the trailer, we can already see that she kills her performance, so I am excited to see what she brings to the table. I am sure she will bring honor to us all.
I kind of skimmed over the fact that there will be a witch in the live-action film, but that’s a pretty big deal. The witch will be played by actress Gong Li, and I am more than ready to see how the inclusion of a witch affects the plot of Disney’s original animated version of Mulan. I think it’ll be a pretty cool plot twist.
Even though the trailer only gave us a 90-second tease of the film, it already looks amazing. It begins with her parents saying the matchmaker has found her an “auspicious match” and continues to show Mulan fighting battles and defying the matchmaker in the background, who is listing all the “qualities of a good woman” -- “quiet, composed, graceful, disciplined.” Welp, not today, matchmaker, because Mulan represents everything a woman truly is: fearless, fierce, strong, dedicated. It is her duty to fight. Ahhhh, I know where I will be on March 27, 2020! Check out Mulan’s official Instagram to stay updated!
