Everything We Know So Far About Greta Gerwig's Take on 'The Chronicles of Narnia'!

Written by Ada C. Rahola. Published: October 16 2024

Friends, Narnia's wardrobe is opening once again thanks to Greta Gerwig. Fourteen years after the last Narnia film, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010), graced our screens, it was announced that 4-time Oscar nominee Gerwig is ready to take us back to the magical land with animals who talk, an evil White Witch, and a lion called Aslan. For those who don't know, The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of 7 books written by the British author C.S. Lewis in which four human protagonists visit a land called Narnia via the inside of a wardrobe in one of the empty rooms of the house they have recently been relocated to during World War II. The first and most well-known book of Lewis's Narnia series, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, was last adapted for the big screen back in 2005.

So what do we know about the new adaption of The Chronicles of Narnia film? Not a lot, but we know for certain that Greta Gerwig will be the director of the reboot and it's being produced by Netflix and Walden media.

As for the new cast...

Contrary to a previous report, the actor Louis Partridge (from the 2020 film Enola Holmes) will not play “one son of Adam” or a Pevensie brother in this forthcoming adaptation. However, it is confirmed that Tilda Swinton will return as the White Witch whiile David Oyelowo will again be the voice of Mr. Beaver and Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan. . Saoirse Ronan has publically said that frequent collaborator Gerwig hasn't yet approached her to appear in Narnia, but having seen her in every film Greta has directed up to this point, it's very likely she will sign on soon. As for the roles of the 4 Pevensie children, these have not been announced yet.

The Chronicles of Narnia will be the next project for Greta Gerwig following her smash-hit film Barbie from last year. She reinvented the iconic Barbie doll, transforming her role from an objectified girl into a powerful, independent and intelligent woman. When Christopher Nolan released Oppenheimer on the same day as Barbie last summer, it led to the unprecedented "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, a global movement that found movie lovers streaming into the theatres to watch both movies back to back. Oppenheimer made $958 million at the box office, and Barbie made over $1.4 billion! Oppenheimer may have won the Oscar, but Barbie (thanks to Gerwig) won our hearts.

Greta Gerwig's films are personal, moving, profound, groundbreaking, and certainly unique. Without Gerwig's touch of fun and entertainment in her scripts, they would hit much differently. After the great films she has directed, let's not imagine a film industry without her. There isn't. Greta reinvented Little Women, and also she reinvented Barbie. We can't wait to see how will she reinvent Narnia!
