Everything We Know About Kim Kardashian-West’s Prison Reform Activism!

Written by Maryssa Rillo. Published: August 08 2019

She is more than just a beauty mogul and reality TV star; she is also an activist for prison reform. Kim Kardashian-West has been using her platform for the greater good and has been speaking up for inmates whom she feels have received unjust punishments. To keep us all in the loop, Kardashian-West will be making a documentary on prison reform that will be aired on Oxygen called “Kim Kardashian-West: The Justice Project”.

Personally, I think this is great. I love when celebrities use their platform to educate fans. Not only do I think that the work she is doing/has done is amazing, but I think that the documentary was a good idea. This way, she can share her experience with others and make an even greater impact.

So, although we don’t know too much about the documentary yet, we do know a few things. Kim announced via Twitter that she met with inmates at a D.C. prison who take courses with Dr. Marc Howard, a Georgetown professor. According to Kim, the inmates are able to receive Georgetown credits. She also said she “couldn’t wait to share their stories with us.” So, maybe we will hear a few on the documentary?

Kim has been working hard to support the initiatives that she believes are needed to help prison reform. She has been to the White House in support of these initiatives, she has worked with lawyers, and she has helped reduce sentences for inmates who she felt were given too harsh of punishments. Not only has Kim been an activist, but she has taken it into her own hands by studying to become a lawyer. This way she can be better educated on the subject.

Again, I think this is GREAT! Kim is standing up for what she believes in and is taking steps that go above and beyond. One of Kim’s most famous success stories is Alice Marie Johnson. Alice spent 22 years in prison after being convicted of a non-violent drug offense. After hearing her story, Kardashian-West made it her mission to free Johnson and spoke with the President. Johnson was then granted clemency in June 2018. Watch the emotional moment when Kim gives Johnson the big news below!

If that doesn’t give you shivers, I don’t know what to say. I’m definitely ready for the documentary to air. Hopefully we get to see more happy moments like these. You go, Kim!
