6 Must-Watch European TV Shows!
Its quarantine time, which means you can finally begin a new TV show without feeling guilty!
This might be the perfect opportunity to go outside of your comfort zone and try different series from other countries besides the USA. Europe has been producing a TON of new and fantastic content lately, much of which is actually available in the States!
Are you ready? Let's jump right into it!
1. "Elite" (Netflix)
Looking for a high school drama full of dark secrets and mysterious characters? Then you totally need to watch Netflix’s “Elite”!
Not everything is what is seems. When three students get a scholarship to study in a prestigious (and very posh) Spanish high school, some of their classmates aren’t happy to share their school with nobodies – and conflicts begin right away.
Personally, this series gives me major “Riverdale” meets “13 Reasons Why” vibes. The glamorous atmosphere and the class tension are combined with interesting characters and plot twists that I couldn’t see coming. But fair warning: it’s super addictive!
2. "Dark" (Netflix)
This German Netflix series became really popular after the “Stranger Things” success – after all, they share the “missing kid” trope and the supernatural element. However, don’t think you know where this series is taking you: once you watch the pilot, you realize anything is possible!
When four families are shaken after a boy’s disappearance, the past begins to catch up and reveals things that perhaps should have stayed buried. As the investigation unfolds, we realize something: the question is not who or where, but when.
This one is for sci-fi lovers who are ready to have their expectations subverted -- in a good way!
3. "The Bridge" (Amazon Prime)
What happens when a body appears right in the border of 2 countries?
The Danish and Swedish police will need to work together if they want to catch a dangerous, smart criminal who abandoned his victim in the bridge that separates both nations.
However, the police officers involved in the case have very different methods and personalities, which will make the investigation even tougher than expected. If you’re looking for complex characters and a dark, cold atmosphere, stick around and give it a try on Prime Video!
4. "Luna Nera" (Netflix)
Any fans of "Sabrina" here?
This Netflix series might be one of my favorites this year! An Italian girl finds her destiny in an ancient witch coven after her grandmother’s death. But trouble arises as she is hunted for practising dark magic by the father of the boy she falls in love with. Set in the 17th century, the story perfectly portrays witchcraft history and hooks you right from the start.
Even though this one totally sets the mood for Halloween, I highly recommend it for binge-watching anytime; it only has one season!
5. "Skam"
This Norwegian series focuses on the lives of a group of teenagers as they navigate high school problems. Its overwhelming success made it possible for many adaptations in different countries, but the original one beats them all!
It’s awesome to see the talk about mental health, religion, sexuality, or bullying in such a natural and refreshing way while keeping a warm mood. Each season focuses on a different character, so you can see their perspectives and individual problems more in depth.
The catch? The series are pretty hard to find legally since they aren’t in any of the major streaming platforms. Hopefully this will change in the future, but for now it looks like we’ll just have to wait to properly watch it online.
6. "Money Heist" (Netflix)
And last but not least, we have the international Netflix phenomenon “Money Heist”!
How do you steal money without taking it from others? Easy -- you only need to create it.
When a mysterious man called “The Professor” offers a gang of criminals the opportunity to rob the Royal Mint of Spain, it just sounds too good to be true. As they prepare for the heist of their lives, things might get out of control. If you like action, suspense, and tension, I totally recommend this one.
Happy Binge-ing!
