Biggest Winners & Fiercest Fashions at the 2021 Golden Globes!

Sunday night’s (February 28) 78th Annual Golden Globes ceremony was the unofficial kick-off for the 2021 (virtual) awards season, and we’re looking forward to how the remaining ceremonies will play out all the way up to the Oscars. Despite the Zoom format, looks were served, celebrations occurred, and we got to experience the rush of rooting for our favorite movies and celebrities again!

This year, the Globes handed out some of its top awards to first-time winners, cementing them as not only names to watch but forces to be reckoned with now and in the future. We also saw longtime talents like Catherine O’ Hara and Gillian Anderson score big, and we watched history being made in several categories!

I know I’ve been missing all the excitement, so newcomers or veterans, dressed up or dressed down, winners or losers, we’ve got the breakdown on all you need to know! Check out our favorite moments below!

First up, Anya Taylor-Joy won for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her complex and memorable turn as Beth Harmon in "The Queen’s Gambit". A rare double nominee (her pitch-perfect performance in EMMA. is not to be forgotten!), she stunned in a glamorous emerald green look, styled by Law Roach, amplifying her striking features with a deep-V neckline and matching shimmering coat.

Major talent Daniel Kaluuya took home Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for his portrayal of revolutionary Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. We’re ecstatic to see him back in the race after his brilliantly haunting performance in Get Out. Despite some technical difficulties, he still looked stylish in a dark blue Dior blazer with black and white lapels and a simple silver chain. 

Our favorite pair from "The Crown", Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor, both took home Best Performance by an Actress and Actor in a Television Series - Drama, respectively. The two were crowned for their regal roles as Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles, winning out in categories filled with equally brilliant performers. They absolutely dressed the part too, with Corrin channeling Pierrot clowns, Twiggy, and Elizabethan-era collars all at once in Miu Miu, and O’Connor in a black and white Loewe suit with sharp lapels contrasted by a silk cravat. Of course they were dressed to rival royalty; they were both styled by Harry Lambert, the genius behind Harry Styles’s colorful array of much-loved suits!

John Boyega’s venture beyond Star Wars to Steve McQueen’s "Small Axe" gave him the room to show off his incredible skills, and the HFPA took notice, awarding him Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or TV Movie. Dressed in a cream blazer and white button-down, complete with Balenciaga tracksuit bottoms (yes, he wore sweatpants but they were DESIGNER sweatpants, okay?!), he celebrated his win after the show on Instagram Live. 

Chloé Zhao’s beautiful film Nomadland propelled her to a landmark victory as the first woman of color and second woman ever (!!) to win Best Director - Motion Picture at the Globes. As the writer, director, and producer of the movie, she came in comfort, donning a green T-shirt with braided hair as she raised her matching green mug in a virtual toast to her well-deserved win. 

In a surprise twist, Andra Day won Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama over a competitive category of ladies for her star turn as the titualar role in The United States vs. Billie Holliday, making her just the second Black woman to win this award. Just as stunning as her performance, she wore a silk halter Chanel gown, complete with Chanel jewelry, and added a pop of color with her red lip and matching nails. We’re excited to see how she shines throughout the season!
