All 4 'Halloweentown' Movies, RANKED!

Written by Kevin Norman. Published: October 24 2022

We all know Hocus Pocus is THE Disney movie of Halloween, but there is another pack of Disney witches who deserve the spotlight when the leaves begin to fall. Halloweentown is a Disney Channel Original Movie and staple in every '90s baby's childhood. It started as one film that expanded into a series and focuses on a girl named Marnie who discovers she is a witch. Marnie follows her Grandma back home after her annual visit, and she and her siblings end up in a magical town called Halloweentown where all ghouls, witches, vampires, and monsters live peacefully in harmony. Grab your brooms and take off with me as I rank which is the best of the series!

4. Return To Halloweentown (2006)

This is by far my least favorite one of the bunch. Due to a scheduling conflict, Kimberly J. Brown wasn't able to reprise her role as Marnie Piper, so Sara Paxton stepped in to fill her shoes. Paxton isn't a terrible actress by any means, but imagine growing up with a series and seeing someone else pretend to be your heroine. It just didn't work, and this film felt like it was more of a push than a much-needed sequel to the story. In this final installment, Marnie and her brother attend college in Halloweentown at Witch U and begin to fulfill a prophecy.

3. Halloweentown High (2004)

In this film, Marnie wants to help dissipate the border between the mortal world and Halloweentown and proposes that she take some residents of Halloweentown and integrate them into her mortal school. She acts as their tour guide and her grandma (Debbie Reynolds) becomes a substitute teacher to watch over them all. This film would have been the perfect button ending for the series and I still wish they ended it here.

2. Halloweentown (1998)

This is the one that started it all but I've listed it second because this is one of those rare instances where the sequel beats the original. In this film, Marnie and her siblings follow their grandma Aggie home to a magical world called Halloweentown. Marnie and her siblings then discover they come from a line of powerful Cromwell witches, and when their family is in danger, it's up to them to use their powers and rescue them!

1. Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge (2001)

This is the best film in the entire series. Our characters are a little more grown-up, there is a lot more magic, and there is jumping between worlds. In this film, Aggie's magical spellbook goes missing after a Halloween party, and she and Marnie soon discover that Halloweentown has been put under a gray spell, turning everything monochromatic, dull, and boring. But in the meantime, someone is turning people in the mortal world into real-life monsters. Our heroines fight the clock before the portal between the worlds close, and there is this final moment in the end that still gives me happy chills. If you watch any of the series, make sure to watch Halloweentown and this one. They're honestly the only two you truly need.
