8 Actresses Who Could Totally Suit up As Batgirl on the Big Screen!
A Batgirl film is reportedly in the works, and Warner Bros. has this exciting endeavor at the top of their list of upcoming releases. Bumblebee scribe Christina Hodson is set to pen the script for the character’s first solo motion picture on the big screen, and a female director is likely to be named for the hugely anticipated movie.
With all the hype surrounding Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, which the Batgirl film will tie-in with, many fans can’t help but ponder who could play Barbara Gordon, the daughter of GCPD’s Commissioner, and the most popular version of the infamous DC hero.
This is the first time the red-haired librarian by day/masked crime-fighting vigilante by night will be introduced in any of the recent cinematic continuities, but this isn’t the first time the character has appeared on the silver screen. She was famously brought to life by Alicia Silverstone in the 1997 film Batman & Robin. Now, a new talented actress will have the opportunity to suit up as Gotham’s other Dark Knight.
Of all the top-notch talent out there to choose from, here are the top 8 actresses that could perfectly portray Batgirl in her very own superhero flick.
1. Erin Moriarty
Erin Moriarty may not be a household name yet, but she is well on her way to achieving that coveted status.
Savvy fans will recognize her from "True Detective", The Watch, and Captain Fantastic. But what really sets this actress apart from the rest as a standout choice to play Batgirl is her comic book credibility. On the small screen, she’s already been part of the MCU with her time on the Netflix series "Jessica Jones". She has since become one of the major selling points for Amazon subscribers to tune in to their gritty superhero drama "The Boys" as Starlight.
We already know she looks great in a cape, and with the signature red hair Barbara Gordon is known for, she would be perfect to play the part in a solo film.
2. Rose Leslie
There is no way you could make a Batgirl list and not have Rose Leslie on it.
She proved time and time again that she was stronger faster and sharper than Jon Snow in "Game of Thrones". And then, when she left Westeros, she took her talents to the courtroom in "The Good Fight", where she uses her superior intellect to uncover the truth to take down the bad guys.
Ms. Gordon is known for being a formidable individual in terms of combat, and her detective skills are off the charts. Was Leslie born to play Batgirl? That's not for me to decide, but all the evidence is there to support the bold claim.
3. Eiza Gonzalez
Eiza Gonzalez is one of the biggest action stars out there, and she deserves to headline her own superhero film.
Every time she’s on-screen, she is a force to be reckoned with, playing a slew of different badass characters. Her roles in Bloodshot, Baby Driver, Hobbs and Shaw, and Alita: Battle Angel added significant value to those film’s overall experience as well as showcase to the world that she does it better than the boys every time. Her next appearance is set for the epic showdown that is Godzilla Vs. Kong.
When it comes to meeting all the qualifications to play Batgirl, Gonzalez meets the criteria perfectly, and her first headlining gig should be the female Caped Crusader.
4. Kiernan Shipka
Kiernan Shipka has been in the game for some time now, and with every project she takes on, she continuously shows a flawless progression as an actress.
From her early days in "Mad Men" to her thrilling run in the hit Netflix series "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", she knows what she’s doing when the camera’s rolling. Shipka has plenty of practice taking on the forces of evil, and the villains of Gotham would be no match for her take on Barbara Gordon.
All signs point to Batgirl being her breakout role if she is chosen to suit up as the famous DC character.
5. Ella Balinska
The latest Charlies Angels film didn’t entirely turn out the way the studio would have hoped, but the one silver lining from the whole affair is it introduced the world to Ella Balinska. Her turn as a super-spy proved she has what it takes to be the industry’s next big action star.
Balinska has the smooth skills of James Bond mixed with relentless precision of John Wick, all wrapped up in the fierceness of Queen Cleopatra. With all that working in her favor, there are a countless number of heroes this talented actress could play, but to not even consider her for the role of Batgirl would be so crazy it would get you locked up in Arkham.
6. Kaya Scodelario
It's a mystery why Kaya Scodelario isn’t headlining three action franchises a year, given her background in the genre.
Her first foray into adventure and sci-fi was the Maze Runner films, where she first introduced the world to her skills on screen. Then she took things up a notch by boarding another franchise with a turn in Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Even Batman would agree that, from what's on her resume, she has what it takes to suit up as Batgirl in a solo endeavor, and if she were to take on Killer Croc on her first at-bat, given what we saw her do in Crawl, that DC villain is in for the fight of his life.
7. Allison Williams
Allison Williams is an expert at shocking audiences and taking on surprising roles.
In the horror hit Get Out, everyone thought she was the girl-next-door, but she was really just as psychotic as her crazy family, smiling like the Joker as her former flame sends her to the afterlife. Then she continued to up the shock factor on Netflix’s The Perfection, where she takes down some very naughty music teachers.
While she doesn’t have a ton of experience in the genre, the few times we have seen her in action have been superbly crafted, making her an excellent choice to play Gotham’s female Dark Knight. Given what she has already gone up against, it seems like being Batgirl would be a walk in the park for the criminally underrated actress.
8. Hannah John-Kamen
Actress Hannah John-Kammen is everything you would want in a Batgirl and then some.
She has experience in the MCU as the villain Ghost in Ant-Man and the Wasp and she also played one of the evil execs in the action-packed sci-fi thrill ride that was Ready Player One. She also has a lot of practice sneaking around in the shadows from her time on Netflix’s "The Stranger", something every member of the Bat-family needs to excel at.
Even though the majority of her credits are on the wrong side of the law, Batgirl seems like the perfect opportunity for her to break her mean streak.
