5 Young Stars Using Their Platforms To Advocate For Mental Health

Written by Katerina Leva. Published: November 10 2024

Historically, public figures have trees to hide the pain and put on a happy facade playing the part of ultimate success and an impeccable life while secretly struggling inside. This led to bigger psychological problems that inevitably resulted in the deaths of some of our most beloved stars.

Fortunately, today's stars have grown tired of masking the struggle. Young celebrities open up about their mental issues that help them not to bottle up their emotions and help their fans to see that even their idols are made of the same flesh and blood,  suffer the same problems, and battle the same insecurities. Here and 5 such young stars that teach us it's okay to not be okay:

1. Zendaya – Bringing Depth to "Euphoria"’s Complex Characters

HBO's "Euphoria" has sparked the mental awareness conversation on its own, and a lot of actors and actresses from the TV series use their voices to spread mental health awareness. Zendaya has openly discussed how the show has influenced conversations around mental health. In interviews, she has shared that portraying Rue has brought a deep sense of responsibility, especially regarding the sensitive issues of addiction and mental illness. Beyond her role, Zendaya uses her social media to highlight mental health resources and encourages her fans to seek help when needed. She openly talks about how she goes to therapy and advocates for people to do the same. She’s become a voice for young people struggling with similar issues, using her fame to drive awareness and support.

2. Timothée Chalamet – Discussing the Pressures of Fame

Zendaya’s Dune co-star and good friend Timothée Chalamet has opened up about the pressures of being a young actor in Hollywood, especially when it comes to mental well-being. Chalamet's candidness about anxiety and self-doubt resonates deeply with fans, particularly younger audiences facing similar pressures. Through interviews, he has spoken about coping with the expectations that come with fame and he has been vocal about the importance of mental health care. Chalamet also supports organizations that focus on youth mental health, using his platform to reach those who may feel isolated or misunderstood.

3. Billie Eilish – A Voice for Anxiety and Depression

Billie Eilish has probably been one of the most sincere and open public figures to have shared their stories about mental health and coping with problems. She has been incredibly transparent about her experiences with depression, anxiety, and body dysmorphia. Eilish’s music often reflects these themes too, offering a cathartic outlet for fans going through similar struggles. Through social media, she talks openly about her mental health journey, advocating for acceptance and understanding. Eilish has collaborated with organizations like the Crisis Text Line to provide mental health resources for fans in need. Her openness has helped normalize conversations around mental health, especially for teens facing these issues.

4. Selena Gomez – Leading by Example with Her Own Mental Health Journey

Selena Gomez is not only openly discussing her mental health journey but also has significantly contributed to mental health research and availability by founding the Rare Impact Fund, aiming to raise $100 million for mental health education and resources. Selena, who has grown up in the public eye, has shared her struggles with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder.

5. Florence Pugh – Taking a Stand Against Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying has become a critical problem in recent years due to the popularity of social media platforms, and the first victims were, of course, celebrities. Florence Pugh has not only tackled complex characters on-screen but also openly discusses the mental toll of cyberbullying. Through her social media, Pugh has confronted critics and trolls, making it clear that bullying and online harassment have real emotional impacts. Her stance has empowered fans to stand up for themselves and shed light on how social media pressures can affect mental health.

Spreading mental awareness is essential to fight against mental illnesses and struggles, because the first thing that comes with feeling not okay is shame and fear -- shame of being a burden and fear of being rejected. With these young stars opening up about their own issues, they let others know: you are not alone. We should praise them for thot bravery and support. Loudly speaking about things like this takes a lot of bravery, and we thank young Hollywood for that!
