For a while now, the world has been abuzz about the latest chapter in the Star Wars Saga, and not only is such excitement and anticipation completely normal, it’s damn near government mandated at this point. But the powerful folks who make important decisions have asked us to turn our eyes away from the massive fantasy epic from Walt Disney, in order to focus on... well, another massive fantasy epic from Walt Disney.
Ah yes, we had almost forgotten about you, Captain America: Civil War, but rest assured we will not make that mistake again! At least until December 18th, then we’re gonna forget about you again for a li'l bit. But it’s nice to know that we have something else to look forward to this year once the likes of Finn and Kylo Ren have sheathed their laser swords.
First and foremost, I’d like to pay my compliments to the trailer. The biggest doubt on my mind, and the minds of dozens of other folks around the world is that the story in question was a tad too large and unwieldy for it to really be considered a “Captain America” movie. “Avengers 2.5” is an affectionate, yet guarded, nickname that many have applied to this movie, and little choice did those folks indeed have after casting revealed that nearly every character from every other Marvel movie was going to drop in to say hello. I wouldn’t be surprised if Agent Coulson’s "cellist friend" dropped by to throw a few punches at Hawkeye. Thankfully, though, this trailer gives us the very strong impression that Captain America will, in fact, be the anchor for this film, and as far as the Looks/Feels Departments are concerned, it’s not too far off from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And since that film is considered by many to be the finest Marvel movie to date, this is not a bad thing at all.
Once again, the story centers upon Steve Rogers trying to make sense of this current period in time that he was never meant to be an active part of. The government, represented by General Thunderbolt Ross (they finally managed to squeeze another character from The Incredible Hulk into one of these flicks), is tired of masked vigilantes roaming the globe and causing destruction and mayhem, even if it is in the process of trying to accomplish Greater Good. Ross wants every superhero to be registered, and this does not sit well with Captain America, who believes that not only is this an invasion of privacy to an extent, but one that could put the heroes and their loved ones in danger, particularly his friend Bucky, whom he is still looking for/trying to protect. Tony “the Iron Man” Stark disagrees with his fellow Avenger and believes that cooperating with the government is the right thing to do, as it will demonstrate that heroes are not above the laws of the land. And then, according to the trailer, a lot of flying and punching ensues. The Avengers are split right down the middle in regards to this registration issue, and nobody knows just how far this conflict will go and who it will ultimately hurt.
It’s too soon to tell just how things will play out but here are a couple of things we do know and a few that I’m willing to guess at:
1. The relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes (Captain America and The Winter Soldier, respectively) seems to be as strong as ever and not simply tossed to the curb just so audiences can focus on Group A of superheroes punching Group B of superheroes. This pleases me.
2. Iron Man gets beaten up.
3. Black Panther, ladies and gentlemen! Why is he here? It looks like, in the trailer, something akin to the United Nations is attacked. I’m also guessing that Bucky is accused of this crime and that maybe a representative from Wakanda (the country in Africa that Black Panther rules) is hurt or killed as a result and this brings Black Panther to America to search for The Winter Soldier.
4. War Machine gets beaten up.
5. No sign of Ant-Man or Spider-Man, and as such, we don’t know whose side they’re on in the movie, but if they follow the comics at all, then that means Spidey will be fighting on Team Tony. As for Ant-man, I’m guessing he’s on Cap’s side, given his previous relationship with the Falcon.
The movie comes out on May 6th, and undoubtedly all of our questions will be answered then!
