4 Disney Films that Positively Represent Diversity!

3. The Princess and the Frog

In 2009, Disney introduced its first African-American princess. Though long overdue, Princess Tiana was a huge deal and she not only represented diversity, but she was also a good role model to girls of all colors. Tiana is strong-minded, independent, and hard working.

This movie is set in 1920s New Orleans and tells a story of a waitress who dreams of being a restaurant owner. She meets a frog who says he is a prince but has been cursed. To reverse the curse, Tiana kisses the frog, but instead of turning him into a prince, she turns herself into a frog! Through hard work and persistence, Tiana reverses the curse and fulfills her dream to be a restaurant owner... and a princess as an added bonus!

The film is filled with cultural identity, from the setting and the food, to the voodoo and the music. There is Louis, who is an alligator that plays jazz, and Ray who is a Cajun firefly. These are just a few examples of how this film uniquely adds cultural identity to the story line.
