4 Disney Films that Positively Represent Diversity!
4. Coco
Last, but definitely not least, is the movie Coco. I am biased, but Coco is by far my favorite Disney film to ever be created. Disney did such an amazing job at representing the Hispanic culture. Even the little things such as the colors of the film are great!
Coco is about a young Mexican boy who loves music but is banned from it due to family conflicts. During the holiday Dia De Los Muertos ("Day of the Dead"), Miguel is sent to the land of the dead. The film follows Miguel on his journey to figure out how to return home before time runs out.
The film has so much cultural identity, I honestly don’t know where to begin. The colors, the food, the traditions, the music… everything stayed true to the Mexican culture. Being Mexican myself, it was nice to see people on the screen that looked like me, talked like me, and acted how my family does. The movie even made me cry at the end! The representation of family importance was also strong. This was definitely a great addition to Disney films!
Though we still have a long way to go, Disney is definitely taking steps in the right direction. Being a female of minority decent, I know how important it is to see strong character leads that look like me. It is also important for people of all backgrounds to learn about different cultures and see diversity being represented on mainstream television. Disney has not stopped in their progression either. They are actually taking even larger strides. For example, they recently cast Halle Bailey as Ariel in their live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. This is great!!! Kudos to you Disney!
