4 Disney Films that Positively Represent Diversity!

1. Moana

Ahhhh! This is one of my favorite Disney films BY FAR! This movie is not only cute, but it is both informational and inspirational. Moana is not another Disney character that needs to be saved by love. The movie was released in 2016 and is about a strong-minded girl who is the daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village. When the ocean chooses Moana to save her ancestral island, she steps up to the plate and independently does what it takes to save her people.

The movie not only portrays people of color, but it represents cultural identity and celebrates the Polynesian culture through different traditions, clothing, and music. Big bonus here as well! The voices of the main characters, Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) and Dwayne Johnson (Maui), are also themselves of Polynesian decent. How cool is that?! I not only love this film for the representation of culture, but I also love this film for portraying a woman as strong, independent, and capable of anything her mind is set to accomplish. I think that is very important for both girls and boys to see.

Moana is the hero in this story… and she does it all for her family. Isn’t that great? I can’t get over how amazing this movie is!
