Zayn Malik works with Iron Maiden cover artist on fan merchandise
Zayn Malik has created a new range of merchandise with iconic Iron Maiden illustrator Mark Wilkinson.
The 23-piece offering is available to purchase from Zayn's website, and has everything from T-shirts printed with the popstar's face to hoodies decorated with Urdu script - a nod to his South Asian roots.
The former One Direction singer released his debut studio album
Mind of Mine in March (16), with lead single Pillowtalk becoming a
global hit.
In an interview with Vogue.com, the singer/songwriter explained his
design process: "My family is from Pakistan, so having artwork in
Urdu has huge significance to me," Zayn told Vogue.com, of the tees
that are emblazoned with his name and the word "Mind" in the
Hindustani language.
For the graphic print T-shirts, the 23-year-old took inspiration
from the rock bands of the '70s and '80s, and worked with legendary
cover art illustrator, Mark Wilkinson of Iron Maiden fame, on the
designs.
"Working with Mark gave me a license to do something exciting
conceptually with a lot of color and detail," he explained, adding
that his favorite shirt in the collection has an image of him
emerging out of a city engulfed in flames. "The art we created
gives a nod to the vintage rock-band T-shirts but with my own
concept."
Although he collaborated on some garments, Zayn says the eclectic
collection is a reflection of his own personal style and was
created with his own wardrobe in mind.
"I wanted to approach this as an opportunity to extend my ideas as
an artist, and to give fans another facet of who I am," he
explained.
The collection is available to purchase from zaynmalikstore.com
from Tuesday (28Jun16), with prices starting from $30 .
