Tyga's clothes inspired by '90s hip hop

Tyga always tries to imbue his attire with a sense of originality.

While he alternates between wearing slouchy streetwear and sharp suits for red carpet appearances, the Real Deal rapper explains that he is mostly inspired by hip hop culture.

“As an artist, you're inspired by so many different things,” he told racked.com. “I'm inspired by early rap. I'm really inspired by the '90s and early 2000s, because the essence was so original. Now there's not a lot of originality, you know what I mean?”

Tyga, real name Micheal Ray Stevenson, who split from reality TV star girlfriend Kylie Jenner this month (May16), also wanted to reflect his personal style sensibilities in his new fashion line.

Launched last Thursday (12May16) at Saks Fifth Avenue, the Marcelo Burlon x Tyga five-piece capsule collection features a hoodie, sweatshirts and shorts, all printed with Asian-inspired urban designs. Of the line, the 26-year-old said he wanted to keep designs “super simple” and thinks there is potential to expand the brand.

“I want to do high fashion streetwear - like, dope stuff you wear in airports or to go out to the club or even to dinner. That's why I wanted to partner with Marcelo, because I feel like he represents that,” he shared.

The heavily tattooed star added that he also relished the opportunity to work with Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing on the outfit he wore to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute annual Met Gala in New York earlier in the month (02May16). While he knew he didn’t want to wear a traditional suit to the star-studded event, Tyga was happy with his “really dope” black trouser suit and embellished silver blazer.

“I appreciate Olivier for giving me the chance and inviting me. I'm just looking forward to everything that I've got going on,” he smiled.
