Pharrell Williams takes style cues from regular people
Pharrell Williams takes his style cues from everyday people he sees walking the streets.
The singer and record producer has long been interested in fashion, collaborating with the likes of Louis Vuitton, sunglass maker Moncler, denim brand G-Star Raw and sportswear giant Adidas on various projects. Talking about his ventures into the fashion industry, the 43-year-old thinks "regular, everyday people" have the best sense of style.
"The more individuality you've got - it doesn't mean you need to be
weird, but just be noticeably yourself," he told WWD. "I love those
kinds of characters. Those are the most inspiring to me because
what they wear is perfunctory."
Pharrell, who counts Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld among
his mentors, adds that the advancement of the digital age has
altered the industry significantly, with designers able to see who
is wearing what on various social media platforms.
The Grammy-Award winner's latest fashion line wasn't influenced so
much by technology but instead embraces themes of power and
spirituality. Last Friday (13May16), Pharrell unveiled the second
drop of his Adidas Originals = Pharrell Williams Pink Beach
collection, transforming a West Hollywood studio lot into a dreamy,
pink space complete with an Instagram-friendly setup of palm trees,
wooden beach chairs and surfboards. Of his line of vibrant
lightweight floral-patterned pieces, swimwear and sporty leggings,
Pharrell explains that he was initially inspired by the "power of
music" and connecting "to that most sacred place" within.
"And then we started throwing those ideas around and was just like,
man, what if there was a place where everyone just instantly was on
that frequency the minute you got there? And that was Pink Beach.
It's just spirituality," he said.
