This is Us loses Emmy nomination over technicality
This Is Us has had one of its 11 Emmy Awards nominations revoked.
Executives at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) have reviewed the episode of the hit NBC show which had been submitted under the Outstanding Contemporary Costumes category and discovered it falls short of the requirements.
In a statement issued to CNN on Saturday (05Aug17), a representative for the awards committee confirmed they've pulled the nomination, but the other 10 nods remain in place.
"Having reviewed the Moonshadow episode of This Is Us, the awards committee noted that the entrant unfortunately miscalculated the proportion of scenes that were period versus contemporary," a spokesman explained. "In fact, the episode is predominately period. The entry (and subsequent nomination) are thereby disqualified."
The rules state that 51 per cent of an episode's costumes must be in a setting that takes place within the last 25 years to be eligible. This Is Us uses flashback sequences on the show to further explain storylines but it appears that due to the high level of flashbacks in the episode submitted, it fell short and therefore didn't comply with the rules.
The new nomination that will replace the show will be announced next week and will compete against Big Little Lies, Empire, Grace and Frankie and Transparent for the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Contemporary Costumes category.
Despite being stripped of the nomination, the show is still up for 10 prizes, including Best Television Series - Drama, with individual nods going to Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia, who are both are hoping to win the Emmy for Best Drama Actor.
Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate Pearson, is also up for the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
The Emmy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on 17 September.
