Dance stars The Chainsmokers stunned students at a Chicago, Illinois high school prom on Saturday (29Apr17) when they crashed the party and staged a surprise performance.

The Closer hitmakers decided to use the Huntley High School bash at the Hyatt Regency hotel to warm up for their tour stop at the Allstate Arena nearby, and further thrilled attendees by posing for photos with students and teachers alike.

"Crashed this prom just now," they posted on Twitter. "It was across the street from our arena show, so why not".

"Your prom could be next," they added.

While teens at the dance thought The Chainsmokers' appearance was a spur-of-the-moment event, it's since been revealed it was all planned beforehand, with the help of school principal Scott Rowe.

Rowe tells the Chicago Daily Herald he received a "random phone call" from an associate of musicians Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall two weeks before the prom, after one student decided to try their luck and put in the request with The Chainsmokers' manager.

"It was probably the toughest secret I've ever kept, because I knew the kids were going to go crazy for it," Rowe said.

Describing the students' reaction to the surprise, he explained, "They (The Chainsmokers) just kind of came from backstage and just started performing Closer. The kids weren't exactly sure what was going on. About three words in, somebody screamed 'That's The Chainsmokers!' and they just bum-rushed the stage."

And Rowe was full of praise for the bandmembers' generous gesture: "It says a lot about those guys and how cool they are to their fans."
