Star-studded Sandy telethon brings in $23 million for storm victims

Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Christina Aguilera have helped to raise an estimated $23 million for the victims of superstorm Sandy after performing at a star-studded telethon on Friday (02Nov12).

Billy Joel and Jon Bon Jovi were also among the huge names who took the stage during the Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together appeal, which aired on Friday evening.

Tina Fey, Kevin Bacon, Whoopi Goldberg and Danny DeVito took part in the fundraiser too, which set out to raise funds for the American Red Cross recovery effort following the huge storm which battered the East Coast earlier this week (begs29Oct12).

And their efforts have paid off - a massive $23 million has been raised by generous viewers, according to early estimates.

American Red Cross officer Peggy Dyer says, "We are incredibly grateful and humbled by this outpouring of support for those who are suffering as a result of Superstorm Sandy.

"Our preliminary results of nearly $23 million raised are an extraordinary example of how the American people pull together in times of disaster. Their generous donations will go directly to those in need, and we urge the public to continue to give."
