Simon Pegg turned to father-in-law to perfect his Scottish Scotty
Funnyman Simon Pegg perfected his Scottish accent for the Star Trek films with a little help from his Glaswegian father-in-law.
The Brit plays Montgomery Scott, aka Scotty, in the new Star Trek movie franchise and, in order to perfect his dialect for the role, he turned to a familial source - his wife's dad.
He says, "One half of my family is Scottish, so I based it on my
father-in-law, who is a proper Glaswegian... He's very proud of
it.
"He tries to make me put things into Star Trek. He gives me words
to say... I tried to get in 'Ya wee scunner' and... 'Get down the
cludgy,' which is the toilet, but (director) J.J. Abrams will come
up to me during shooting and say, 'Simon, we have to understand
what you're saying,' and I have to rein it in a little bit."
