Shia LaBeouf downed moonshine for bootlegger role

Shia Labeouf broke his self-imposed booze ban while shooting his new movie Lawless by downing glasses of powerful moonshine.

The Hollywood star quit drinking after a series of alcohol-fuelled bar brawls and a serious car crash in 2008, which left him with a hand injury.

However, he binged on strong distilled spirits for his role as a Prohibition-era bootlegger in the gangster movie - and the effect was so realistic, his co-star Mia Wasikowska was terrified he would turn into a violent drunk.

LaBeouf tells New York Post gossip column Page Six, "My drinking on this movie was as undestructive (sic) as I could possibly make it, if that makes sense. I did it for the movie. I didn't drink off set for no reason. I did it because, when I showed up on set the next day, my eyes looked like this and my face... had that drunk bloat that I needed, that I couldn't have if that wasn't going on."
