Sheryl Crow's vintage Mercedes has proved a hit at auction - the car pulled in $130,000 for tornado-damaged schools in Joplin, Missouri.

The singer donated her 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster to auction house Gooding & Co., with proceeds from the sale going to help rebuild the devastated city's schools.

The car, which the musician bought in 2005, was expected to pull in $50,000 to $100,000 , but went way over the estimation when it went under the hammer on 22 August (11).

An anonymous couple put in the winning bid for $130,000. As well as the car, the pair will get one of the star's Gibson guitars, two concert tickets and a photo opportunity with Crow herself.

She says, "I am so touched by the donor making this very generous contribution on my behalf to Joplin schools."

Joplin was left ravaged in May (11) after a massive twister ripped through the city and claimed the lives of more than 120 people.
