Shakira teams up with UNICEF for baby shower campaign
Shakira has urged fans to celebrate the imminent arrival of her second child by donating money to charity instead of sending her baby shower gifts.
The Hips Don't Lie hitmaker and her boyfriend Gerard Pique are preparing to welcome their second child and have chosen to expand the 'World Baby Shower' initiative they created with bosses at the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) before the arrival of her son Milan in 2012.
Shakira has urged fans to buy gifts which will benefit vulnerable
children in extreme poverty, including polio vaccinations, blankets
and water purifying kits instead of purchasing presents for
her.
This year (15), she has also encouraged expectant mothers to hold a
similar fundraising baby shower and to share the event on social
media.
Shakira, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, writes in a post on
Facebook.com, "While we are thrilled with the results of the first
run, we would like that long after our own son is born, thousands
of kids continue to receive the aid they need. With the explosion
of social media, every woman that's expecting has the power to use
the celebration of her child's imminent birth to save the lives of
other, less fortunate children around the world... Every baby
deserves to have the best possible start and because we all can and
should help.
"Please join us! Let's make the arrival of our new babies be a
blessing to us, our families, and to many others as well. Thanks
for your support - we can't wait to hear about your baby showers
and to celebrate together!"
Shakira confirmed her pregnancy in August (14).
