Satire The Square takes Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or prize

Swedish director Ruben Ostlund has landed the coveted Palme d'Or prize for his satire The Square at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.


The art world parody was named best movie as the annual French festival came to a close on Sunday (28May17), while fellow filmmaker Sofia Coppola was declared Best Director for The Beguiled.

The period drama, a remake of Clint Eastwood's 1971 film of the same name, stars Colin Farrell as a wounded soldier during the American Civil War, featuring alongside Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning.

Coppola is only the second female director to be celebrated in Cannes' 70-year history, following in the footsteps of Yuliya Solntseva, who won the award for Chronicle of Flaming Years back in 1961.

Joaquin Phoenix earned the Best Actor honor for the thriller You Were Never Really Here, which scored Lynne Ramsay the Best Screenplay accolade in a tie with Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou for The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Diane Kruger was crowned Best Actress for German drama In the Fade, and Nicole Kidman, who had four films screen at Cannes, was presented with a special 70th anniversary prize, reports TheWrap.com.

Meanwhile, Robin Campillo's 120 Beats Per Minute was named the Grand Prize winner, and the Jury Prize went to Andrey Zvyagintsev for Loveless.

Leonor Serrail's Jeune Femme was given the Camera d'Or award, which recognizes directors' first feature films.

Pedro Almodovar headed up the main jury for the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, serving on the panel alongside actors Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, and Fan Bingbing, and fellow moviemakers Paolo Sorrentino, Maren Ade, and Park Chan-Wook, among others.
