Robert Pattinson nervous over onscreen portrayal of relationship with schoolgirl

Robert Pattinson feared a plotline involving a romance between his Good Time character and a schoolgirl would create problems for the movie.

In the heist movie, directed by brothers Benny and Josh Safdie, the Twilight star plays a delusional robber trying to break his brother (played by Benny) from a guarded hospital room.

Good Time debuted in Cannes in May (17) to a six-minute standing ovation, but in an interview with the Daily Mail, the 31-year-old admitted he was worried that a plot line, involving an actress playing a schoolgirl who becomes involved with his character Connie Nikas, would cause controversy.

"At the time of doing the film it felt pretty scary," he told the Mail's Baz Bamigboye. "But the relationship between Connie and Crystal has been cut down and I remember thinking I should make Connie rather asexual, which makes it OK, and I don’t know why I was so worried."

The actor's comments come after actor Armie Hammer was forced to defend his new film Call Me by Your Name from an accusation of promoting pedophilia due to an age-gap romance.

In the 1980s-set movie, Armie plays Oliver, a 24-year-old graduate who travels to Italy for a working holiday with an academic and his family. Oliver then falls for his colleague's 17-year-old son Elio, as portrayed by 21-year-old Timothee Chalamet.

To prepare for the role of Connie, director Josh made Pattinson wander around's New York's mean streets dressed in character and working in corner stores. He also visited a city jail and with slicked back hair. Pattinson almost went unrecognized until he and Safdie reached the girls’ correctional section.

"They were whooping 'Edward, Edward,'" Safdie laughed.

The actor is recently reported to have split from fiancee FKA Twigs. Pattinson began dating the singer, real name Tahliah Barnett, in September 2014, and they got engaged seven months later.
